International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the popular entrance exam that is conducted to test language skills of the candidates. IELTS Exam Format

  1. Listening: In this section the candidates are asked to listen to 4 English recordings of native English speakers. The candidates have to write their answers for the series of questions. The section is of 40 marks
  2. Reading:  In this section the candidates are tested for their reading skills and ability. The candidates are required to read different types of passages and answer the questions asked related to the passages within the specified time limit. The section is of 40 marks
  3. Writing: In this section the candidates are tested for their analysis and writing skills. The candidates are presented with a diagram or a graph, the candidates have to describe the diagram or the graph in their own words. The section is of 40 marks

  4. Speaking: In this section the candidates are tested for their speaking skills and language fluency. The candidates are required to attend a short interview with the IELTS certified professionals. The section is also of 40 marks.

Exam Band and Scores

The IELTS gauges the English language skills of the candidates according to the Scale/Band of 1 to 10. The higher the band the higher is the score. The IELTS score is valid for 2-years from the date of examination taken by the candidate.

Expert user

Very good user

Very good user. You have a fully operational command of the language with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies and inappropriate usage. You may misunderstand some things in unfamiliar situations. You handle complex detailed argumentation well.

Good user

You have an operational command of the language, though with occasional inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings in some situations. Generally, you handle complex language well and understand detailed reasoning.

Competent user

Generally, you have an effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings. You can use and understand fairly complex language, particularly in familiar situations.

Modest user

You have a partial command of the language and cope with overall meaning in most situations, although you are likely to make many mistakes. You should be able to handle basic communication in your own field.

Limited user

Your basic competence is limited to familiar situations. You frequently show problems in understanding and expression. You are not able to use complex language.

Extremely limited user

You convey and understand only general meaning in very familiar situations. There are frequent breakdowns in communication.

Intermittent user

You have great difficulty understanding spoken and written English.

Non-user

You have no ability to use the language except a few isolated words.
