Environmental Health Practitioner

The environmental health practitioners use their scientific and technical ability to ensure people are able to live, work and play in safe, healthy environments. They are also responsible to take care of the environmental health in the surrounding communities.

Role of an Environmental Health Practitioner

As an environmental health practitioner, one will develop, implement and enforce health policies using specialist technical skills and knowledge to maintain and safeguard standards relating to people’s health and well-being.

Responsibilities of an Environmental Health Practitioner

As an Environmental Health Practitioner, one is needed to:

  • Carry out routine or unplanned visits and inspections to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and take action to improve conditions
  • Provide advice and assistance to households and businesses
  • Take photos, produce drawings, remove samples and conduct interviews as part of the inspection processes
  • Investigate complaints from the general public
  • Carry out food hygiene and food standards inspections
  • Investigate outbreaks of infectious diseases and prevent it spreading any further
  • Take water samples to maintain and improve standards in public swimming and bathing areas as well as private water supplies
  • Ensure the health and welfare of animal livestock on farms and other premises as well as during transportation
  • Issue licenses for pet shops and other animal-related businesses
  • Advise on planning and licensing applications
  • Monitor levels of noise, air, land and water pollution
  • Give talks at public enquiries, meetings and exhibitions and ensure compliance through education, advice and enforcement
  • Take enforcement action, initiate legal proceedings, prepare and give evidence in court
  • Advice on health and safety issues in relation to new buildings and developments
  • Arrange for the removal of abandoned vehicles and refuse in the surroundings
  • Be updated with the latest developments of environmental health aspects

Earning Potential

The fresh bachelor of public health graduates will be earning around 4 lakhs to 6 lakhs per annum. The experienced professionals will be earning around 6 lakhs to 8 lakhs per annum. The salaries depend on location and recruiters.

Community Health Worker

Responsibilities of a Community Health Worker

As a community health worker, one will need to:

  • Identify the community health problems and fix the issues
  • Be an ear for the health issues of the local people
  • Develop new resources in dialogue with the community and evaluate existing health programmes
  • Solve the health-related issues of local communities on behalf of their stakeholders
  • Help to raise public awareness on issues relevant to the community health

Clinical research Associate

The Clinical Research Associates are required to monitor the community drug trials of the newly developed drugs and should be capable to provide all the facilities that are required for conducting the clinical trials.

Role of a Clinical Research Associate

As a clinical research associate, one is required to monitor the clinical trials to test drugs for their effectiveness, risks and benefits. They are also responsible to ensure that they are safe and ready for mass production and are allowed to market. As a Clinical research associate, one is required to work on new and existing drugs and certify their probability and effectiveness of the drug on the trial subjects.

Responsibilities of a Clinical Research Associate

As a Clinical research associate, one is needed to:

  • Develop and write trial protocols for clinical trials
  • Present trial protocols to a steering committee
  • Design data collection forms, known as case report forms
  • Coordinate with the ethics committee which safeguards the rights, safety and well-being of all trial subjects
  • Manage regulatory authority applications and approvals that oversee the research and marketing of new and existing drugs
  • Identify and assess the suitability of facilities to use as the clinical trial site
  • Coordinate with doctors, consultants or investigators on conducting the trials in a trial site
  • Setup trial sites and ensure that all the trial materials are available
  • Prepare the reports about the trials conducted and send it to authorities
  • Be updated with latest drug trial regulations followed globally

The demand for the bachelor of public health (BPH) students has started increasing in the last decade.
