Students can now pursue Ph.D after 4-year undergraduate course

In the major move to implement NEP 2020, the UGC has allowed all the students with 4-year degree to join Ph.D courses from this academic year 2022-23. All the students with a minimum CGPA score of 7.5/10 in the four-year-undergraduate programme (FYUP) will now be eligible for Ph.D admissions, without having to complete a master’s programme. He also stated that those who have a CGPA less than 7.5, will have to do a one-year Master’s degree and then can join Ph.D courses.

Mr. Jagadeesh Kumar, chairman UGC, stated that the regulations 2022 for the same will be announced by the end of June. He further added that in order to give boost to FYUP introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP), the decision was taken after recommendations given by the committee appointed by UGC for NEP 2020 implementation.

Mr. Jagadeesh Kumar further stated that through this initiative; the 4-year undergraduate students will become directly eligible for Ph.D courses and they will be trained towards developing a research bent of mind. He further added that it is important to improve the research ecosystem in the country and through this initiative this can be made possible in future. 

He further added that if the total vacant seats are filled by the candidates qualifying in the national level entrance tests (conducted by UGC, CSIR, ICMR, ICAR, etc), the selection of such candidates will be based on a merit list with 100% weightage from interview/ viva conducted by the higher education institution.
