Karnataka Examination Authority has imposed a fine of Rs.55 Lakh for the students who have not returned the engineering seats even after the last date. Based on the data available in KEA, 162 students have failed to surrender the engineering seats and are at an urge to pay a penalty which is five times the fee amount.

Out of the 162 students, 150 belong to SC/ST Community and the rest 12 are from the General Merit and Other Backward Communities. Since the SC/ST students have a fee refund, the penalty charged on them is very less and not more than Rs. 5000/- whereas the 12 students were fined five times of the fee amount.

The fee charged at a private engineering college is Rs. 91,796/- In the year 2021, the penalty collected was around Rs.1.18 crore from the 168 candidates. This year also, a high number of students blocked the seats but the majority of them had returned the seats before the deadline.

The Higher Education Department has introduced a penalty clause to mainly avoid this trend of seat blocking. Many students switch over to some other course after getting a fixed seat, those students must first surrender the other seat allotted to them else the Higher Education Department has clearly confirmed that they have the authority to penalise for the unreturned seats.
