In the major move by the union education ministry, the IITs are given permission to offer B.Ed courses under NEP 2020. Union Education Minister Mr Dharmendra Pradhan stated that The Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs) will be offering a four-year integrated teacher education programme or bachelor in education (B.Ed) courses on their campuses from this academic year. Mr. Pradhan said that the levels of many B.Ed colleges in the country are not up to the mark and this initiative will help in increasing the efficiency of teachers.
The move came after Mr. Pradhan stated that higher education institutions should target exponential growth toward building a future-ready workforce and leverage technology to further decolonise education.
Mr. Pradhan further added that the rising number of Indian start-ups in the unicorn club as an indicator of a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem and called for preparing the students to be job givers and not just job seekers. The Union Education Minister also stated that in order to further strengthen the alumni network, efforts are being taken in the area of internationalisation of education in India, including the study in India programme.
