The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to reinstate the pre-pandemic single-exam structure for the coming academic year according to the official sources. This implies that the Class X and XII board examinations will not be separated into two parts from next academic year.

The CBSE has established a split structure with two terms for the 2021-22 academic year: the Term-I & Term II board examinations. The Term I Board Exams were held in November-December last year, while the Term-II exams are set to begin on April 26. It has been learned that the Term-II examinations would be given higher weightage.

The decision was made following the cancellation of board examinations for the 2020-21 academic year due to the second wave of the Covid-19 epidemic. Students were graded based on past test results, practical examinations, and internal assessments.

After taking suggestions from the schools, the board decided to reinstate the single-exam format, according to a senior official. The officials of CBSE further stated that the CBSE has never said that the two-term test system would be maintained in the future and this was a one-time deal due to unexpected developments due to Covid. Now that schools are fully operational, the decision has been made to keep to the one-time test structure on the temporary basis.

Further the officials stated that however, in terms of curriculum rationalisation, the CBSE will continue to the approach that it implemented over the previous two years, which saw the syllabus cut by 30%. The NCERT will provide us the rationalisation information, upon which an announcement will be made. The current texts may be used to teach the shortened syllabus in schools according to the official sources.

The CBSE officials further stated that to remove the high stakes component of board examinations, the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 suggests that all students be permitted to take the board exams up to two times in an academic year

The officials from CBSE further stated that the board exams for Grades X and XII will be maintained, and the current structure of board and admission tests will be modified to eliminate the necessity for coaching classes. The board examinations will be changed to support holistic development in order to offset the adverse impacts of the existing evaluation system, according to the NEP 2020.
