What is B.Sc. Perfusion Technology?

Perfusion technology involves the study of the physiology, pathology of the human heart and associated equipment that is used to support the heart and lungs during different medical procedures. The perfusion technologists prepare and operate heart-lung machines and other sophisticated equipment as directed by the physicians during operations and critical situations.

The B.Sc. Perfusion Technology students are required to perform multiple tasks on the patients and generate the reports of heart and lungs of the patients during surgeries. They are required to measure the blood pressure and many other vital parameters that are very crucial for the life of the patients whenever necessary. They have to identify the appropriate parameters of mechanical, pharmacological and do thermal manipulation for maintaining the tissue viability in the patients during emergencies. They have to generate accurate reports about the patients using the equipment, based on which the physicians will initiate the proper and accurate treatment for the patients.

The B.Sc. Perfusion Technology students will be studying in-depth about both respiratory and circulatory systems of the human body. Career Prospects

The B.Sc. Perfusion Technology students soon after the completion of their degrees will be working in operation theatres, cardiac care units, intensive care units of both government and private hospitals. They are also seen working in diagnostic centres. The main responsibility of the perfusion technologists is to update the patient’s condition throughout the surgery to the surgeons. They are required to constantly monitor the reports displayed on the circulation and respiratory equipment. They should adjust the heart-lung machines according to the requirements of the patients. They are responsible for the smooth functioning of the machine which is nothing but the external heart that mimics the function of the human heart.

The B.Sc. Perfusion Technology students will be earning an average salary of 4 lakhs to 8 lakhs per annum. The freshly hired graduates will be earning around 3 lakhs per annum and experienced professionals will be earning about 7 lakhs per annum.
