NEET UG Exam 2021: An overview

The NEET UG exam is the national level entrance exam conducted by NTA for medical courses across India. The National Testing Agency (NTA) sees a record high number of first-time registrations for the NEET-UG 2021 exam in the history of NTA. More than 16+ lakhs students have registered for the first time for NEET-UG Exam 2021 across the country.

  • According to the statement of NTA authorities, this has been the first time in the history that NTA saw a huge surge in the number of the NEET-UG registrations since its inception.
  • The latest reports from NTA about NEET-UG, showed that registrations have increased from 11.4 lakhs in 2017 to 16.1 lakhs in 2021.
  • There has been an increase in the number of candidates appearing for the NEET Exam in regional languages when compared to last 5-years statistics. This number has increased from 1.1 lakh in 2017 to 3.4 lakhs in 2021
  • According to the NTA authorities there has been a rise in number of female candidates in NEET-UG 2021 Exam by 40.8% in the last five years, in the NEET UG 2021

The NEET UG exam is already over now and all the results are preserved in a safe digital vault of NTA’s data centres and yet to be revealed with glory. The candidates are now in fingers-crossed mode eagerly waiting for their results and rankings. The fate of many candidates is yet to be decided when the NTA releases the NEET results.

There has been a lot of confusion around the NEET counselling procedures and seat allotments. There have been many arguments about quota allocations and availability of the seats across different colleges in India ranging from AIIMS to many other private medical colleges. The time-to-time interference from the government in the counselling processes has created a lot of chaos in the medical fraternity.

Let’s try to understand the standard counselling procedures in case of both All India Quota (AIQ) Seats and State Quota Seats and try to clear the confusion around the NEET counselling.

The NEET counselling procedure  is carried out in both central and state levels across India:

  1. MCC Counselling for All India Quote (AIQ) seats
  2. State level counselling procedures by respective state authorities for state medical colleges/universities

MCC Counselling

The MCC (Medical Counselling Committee) was formed by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and Government of India. The MCC is solely responsible to conduct counselling and seat allotment processes for medical admissions across all the medical colleges of India.

AIQ Counselling: The MCC conducts counselling for the 15 % of AIQ quota seats allotted from all the government dental and medical colleges

Deemed and Central Universities Counselling: The counselling for Deemed and Central Universities seats across India is also conducted by MCC.

AFMC and IP Wards for ESIC counselling: The DGHS conducts the counselling for the MBBS/BDS admissions at AFMC Pune and ESIC.

State level counselling

State Level Counselling is conducted by the state authorities with the remaining 85% of MBBS/BDS seats that are allotted in the respective states. These seats are generally reserved for candidates holding domicile of the states which are divided in various categories such as OBC(backward castes), SC (scheduled castes), ST (scheduled tribes), General category, PWD(physical disabilities) etc. The students can simultaneously register to these colleges under state authorities to get admission to MBBS/BDS in their desired states. The State  counselling is also open for students from other states who wish to take admission outside their own states.

What next after the NEET Exam?

After the NEET exam, the qualified candidates have to undergo counselling processes. The NEET counselling is a process which is divided into 3-rounds: First round, Second-round and Mop-Up round, where the seats are allocated to the students in the medical colleges across the country based on the rankings of the students. The students can choose their desired courses and if their ranking matches then they will be given seats in their desired colleges or else, they may be allotted seats in other colleges where their ranking matches.

Steps to secure medical seats

The counselling procedures for both AIQ seats and State wise quota seats are similar. The students first go through AIQ counselling procedures. After the completion of the AIQ counselling, the students will undergo State wise seat allotment quota counselling.
