A few lines about Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is one of the oldest engineering disciplines that deals with the building constructions field. The field dates back to the first time when someone placed a roof over his or her head or laid a tree trunk across a river to make it easier to get across.

Civil Engineering is an exciting profession for the job satisfaction it offers. This is because, at the end of the day one can see the results of his/her work, either it may be a completed bridge or a high-rise building, a subway station or a hydroelectric dam. Civil engineers always enjoy a sense of satisfaction because they are the main persons who can build houses and bring smiles in the faces of many people.

Introduction to B.Tech/BE Civil Engineering (Infrastructure Management)

The B.Tech/BE Civil Engineering (Infrastructure Management) is an undergraduate course that is divided into 8-semesters. The course deals with the study of different topics related to the construction industry especially in infrastructure development such as basic steel design, construction Project Management, Geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, structural analysis, etc.

The course provides special emphasis on needs of urban transportation development of urban infrastructure such as roads, bridges, underpass and metro rail structures. Apart from the above specialised subject, it also gives due attention to issues of sustainable civil engineering solutions, considering environment and societal impacts.

Eligibility for B.Tech/BE Civil Engineering

The students who have completed their PUC or 10+2 with science background can join the B.Tech/BE Civil Engineering (Infrastructure Management) course. The students interested in this course are required to qualify competitive exams like CET/COMED-K/JEE with high marks in order to get merit seats in various colleges.

Admission Procedures

The students with relevant qualifications can join the B.Tech/BE Civil Engineering (infrastructure Management) course by two modes. The first one is Merit based admission and the second one is Direct admission.

Let’s discuss in detail

Merit Admission

The students who are interested to join B.Tech/BE Civil Engineering (Infrastructure Management) degree should mandatorily appear for CET/COMED-K/JEE or institutional-based entrance exams and undergo counselling to choose their desired colleges for merit seats. The engineering college allotts the merit seats to the students according to their rankings and marks obtained by them in their entrance exams and marks scored in PUC or 10+2.

There are two types of counselling for the B.Tech/BE students

1. Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) Counselling

The students who are interested to join the government engineering colleges and other engineering colleges affiliated to the government should undergo the counselling procedures of Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA).

The students who intend to join for the merit seats under government quota are required to complete the counselling procedures and join for the B.Tech/BE Civil Engineering (infrastructure management) programme in their chosen colleges. The Engineering colleges under the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) are affiliated to the Visveswaraya Technological University (VTU).

2. COMED-K Counselling

The students who are interested to join the private autonomous engineering colleges and deemed universities that are affiliated to All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) are required to apply for the COMED-K counselling procedures. The students should qualify the COMED-K counselling procedures to get admission to their desired private autonomous engineering colleges or deemed universities for B.Tech/BE Civil Engineering (infrastructure management) programme.

Direct Admission

The students have another option of getting admission to B.Tech/BE Civil Engineering (infrastructure Management) course by direct admission process. Under this mode of admission, the students are given direct admission to their desired colleges under management quota. The direct admission students enjoy many special privileges like that they are not required to apply for any entrance exam for getting admissions. They have an option to choose their desired colleges and universities and book their seats in advance even before the starting of the academic year. The students who are interested in direct admissions are required to contact Galaxy Educational Services for more details.

Placement Opportunities

The B.Tech/BE Civil Engineering students can find ample job opportunities after the completion of their degree.

Some of them are given below:

Coastal Engineer: Coastal engineering is a branch of engineering, which concerns itself with the constructing buildings and features near the coast. Construction engineers not only construct, but they also design and maintain coastal structures. Some of the major responsibilities of a coastal engineer is to oversee the environmental impact and prevent shore erosion.

Construction Engineer: A construction engineer is essential for successful completion of a project. There are several areas where a construction engineer works; some of these aspects which they look into are the designing of the drainage and the sewage system, construction of a building and transport ways such as a railroad and roads. They often look into the construction of commercial housing complexes, where they oversee the installation of electrical systems, plumbing, heating and air conditioning.

Earthquake Engineer: As the name suggests, an earthquake engineer aims to construct buildings and structures in such a way that in an event of an earthquake, they are not destroyed or collapsed and there is no serious damage to the building. Earthquake engineering helps the engineers to minimise the damage caused by earthquakes.

Material Science Engineer: As the name suggests, material engineers work with various materials such as metals, ceramics and plastics. Material engineers also develop and test a wide range of materials. These materials can be used to create computer chips, to aircraft wings, golf clubs and biomedical devices such as CT scanners, surgical machines and many more.

Structural Engineer: Structural engineers work on designing structures such as buildings, bridges, canals, tunnels and many more. Structural engineers usually work in tandem with architects and construction contractors in the capacity as consultants.

Survey Engineer: Survey engineer also known as surveyor usually works in government or city administration. It is the duty of the survey engineer to measure and record geographic elements in and around the city or in remote places. Using geographic information systems, a surveyor might also research legal land records as and when the need arises.

Final Lines
