Emergency medicine is the medical speciality that is concerned with the care of illnesses and injuries requiring immediate medical attention. MD Emergency Medicine doctors are generally termed as Emergency Physicians. The Emergency Physicians care for unscheduled and undifferentiated patients of all ages.
The primary responsibility of them is to initiate resuscitation and stabilisation and to start investigations and interventions to diagnose and treat illness in the acute phase. Emergency Physicians generally practice in hospital emergency departments, emergency medical units, and intensive care units.
Emergency departments are being developed by corporate hospitals and are flourishing. This growth is restricted to corporate hospitals which cater mostly to patients with emergency medical situations.

Eligibility The candidate should be a graduate in Medicine (M.B.B.S)from any university recognised by the Medical Council of India. No candidate shall be admitted to any post graduate degree / diploma course unless the candidate has obtained and produced the eligibility certificate issued by the University.

Admission Process:

Candidates seeking admission to MD should mandatorily qualify NEET-PG Exam. The NEET qualified students are required to undergo two types of counselling. 

1.The students seeking admission to medical colleges affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) should undergo the counselling conducted by the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA).

2.The students seeking admission to deemed universities should undergo counselling conducted by Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).

As a qualified Emergency Physician, one can work in emergency departments of any hospital may be government and private hospitals. They have an opportunity to work in intensive care units (ICU) and critical cardiac care units (CCU). At initial days of a career as an Emergency Physician he/she will be working in a team of emergency response doctors. As experience gains, they can lead a team of emergency doctors as a Lead Emergency Consultant.

They typically work 12-hour shifts but sometimes may extend up to 16-18 hours. They are responsible to diagnose the patients with medical emergency and ensure to keep them stable and alive until the specialists attend.
