Low NEET Score? Here’s How to Still Get Into BDS

Low NEET Score? Here’s How to Still Get Into BDS
Updated at:  22/09/2025

Can You Get Into a Top BDS College with Low NEET Marks? Here’s How

Exploring backup plans, management quotas, and state counselling options.

Let's be frank. NEET results can be a bit of an emotional ride. Some people may be experiencing immense happiness and joy, while some may feel confused and lost, worrying and disappointed all at the same time, and have thoughts like, "What now?".

You received your NEET scores, but not what you were expecting.  Your heart sinks. You might even start questioning everything: "Is BDS even possible now?", "Should I take a drop year?", "What will my parents think?", "Is there a way around this?". Take a deep breath!

If you happen to be one of those people who didn't match your expectations of NEET score, but still want to wear that white coat and become a dentist who earns the respect of your family, friends and community, wait a minute, take a deep breath and keep reading.

This blog is designed to be your friendly survival guide through your next steps. This is still possible. You can still get into a top BDS college in Bangalore or anywhere else in the country, with low NEET scores. We will break it all down for you.

First Things First: What Exactly is BDS?

So, moving further, let’s know the basics first. The BDS full form stands for Bachelor of Dental Surgery. This is the basic degree structure for anyone wanting to attain their certification as a dentist in India.

When it says degree, it doesn’t just mean course. It means commitment. The BDS course duration is over 5 years (1 year of internship), and you will go from holding dental models in the classroom to treating real patients in a clinic. It will be practical, it will be tough, and yes, it will be rewarding. The BDS degree encompasses human anatomy, dental materials, surgery, radiology, prosthodontics, and lots of practical clinical exposure.

Undoubtedly, India has thousands of dental colleges, with so many best BDS colleges in Bangalore that provide good infrastructure, good exposure to patients, and good opportunities after graduation.

The NEET Score is Low. Is It All Over?

Now that we know what the BDS course entails, let's get you ready to do battle! If you are stressed out about your NEET score being on the lower end, and you are asking yourself if there is still any chance for you, the answer is yes, 100%.

This is the part which nobody ever clearly states: A low NEET score does not mean that there is no seat. It just means fewer options in government colleges. Private colleges, backup options and alternative options exist for a reason. So, rather than panicking, it’s time to use your strategies. Here’s what you might have to consider:

  1. State Counselling: You May Still Have a Shot

Each state has its own quota and counselling process for BDS courses. Depending on your category, domicile, and availability of seats, you may get a seat in BDS courses through state counselling, despite your moderate or low scores.

Just because you think you won't make it to BDS does not mean that you pass on state-level counselling. Many students drop out or switch to MBBS in the later rounds, leaving seats vacant for new applicants.

Reasons why you should still apply:

  • BDS cutoffs are a lot lower than MBBS cutoffs in many states.
  • Many reserved categories (SC/ST/OBC/EWS) get additional access to seats.
  • Some seats usually become available in the second and third rounds as students need to drop out or get accepted to MBBS.

        2. Private Dental Colleges & Management Quota: Your Plan B

Now let's address the elephant in the room—management quota.

It's commonly misunderstood, but here’s what the actual truth is. Multiple private dental colleges in Bangalore and across India will have BDS seats for educational and management quota, while the NEET cut-off scores are much lower. This can be expensive, but if you can afford the fee or access an education loan, this is an acceptable and legal way to go about it.

What you need to do:

  • Research private dental colleges in Bangalore.
  • Call up the admissions office or contact an educational consultant who can verify colleges
  • Keep all your documentation like the NEET scorecard, 10th/12th certificates, ID proof, etc, ready.

        3. Exploring Backup Plans: Allied and Parallel Options

Still not sure? Here’s something else to think about.

If BDS feels just out of your plan this year and you’re not willing to take a drop, there are other health care programs you can look at – B.Sc in Dental Hygiene, Dental Mechanics, or even Public Health.

These can give you at least a foot in the door to a dental career and then you could eventually do BDS or even courses after BDS, like MDS (Master of Dental Surgery) with some bridging and effort.

Sure, many students do take a drop year, but make it useful with dedicated NEET study + shadowing dentists or attending dental workshops. If you’re passionate about having a career in dentistry, consider that year spent an investment, not loss.

        4. Don’t Underestimate the Power of BDS

BDS is not the "second option" to MBBS. It's simply a different path. Dentistry is an empire of its own and consists of numerous specialisations and careers after BDS. You can also set up your own clinic, do an MDS, go into research, enter teaching, work abroad, or get into dental product entrepreneurship.

Some of the most prosperous dental specialists in India took inspired action from very humble starts (many of them didn't clear MBBS and some were given low NEET scores). What made them successful? Being consistent, having clarity and mainly courage.

        5. Why Bangalore is a Great Place to Study BDS

When we mention BDS colleges in Bangalore, we mean a place that has:

  • Respected colleges with high patient inflow (great clinical experience)
  • Best learning atmosphere for students
  • Internships in top leading hospitals, workshops and events.
  • Good alumni networks that lead to jobs and post-graduate options

It's not surprising that so many people come to study at the top dental colleges in Bangalore from all over India (or even abroad). If you are looking to do BDS, Bangalore should definitely be at the top of your list.

Finally, Low NEET Scores Don’t Mean You Give Up

If you're still reading the blog, you're probably still clinging to that lifelong dream of becoming a dentist. And that's the first part of winning the battle - never giving up.

The truth that very few people are going to tell you is that your NEET score won't determine what kind of dentist you will eventually be. Your compassion, work ethic and ability to learn every single day will determine your career.

So, whether that is through a management quota, state counselling route, or taking a drop year, always remember, dentistry is a noble and important profession that requires more passionate, patient-first dentists. If that's you, then the doors of opportunity are still wide open.
