The field of clinical research is seeing a surge in demand in recent years. The best example is the Corona Pandemic, that has created havoc in the globe. Every country in the world is rushing towards developing a vaccine and medicine to stop this spread of virus. Clinical trials are very important for all the pharmaceutical companies that have developed Covid vaccines and medicines. The B.Sc Clinical Research students are required in large numbers and they are hired at various job roles by pharmaceutical companies.

Drug Research Associate

The main job of a Drug Research Associate is to run clinical trials to test drugs for their effectiveness, risks and benefits on volunteers. They are also responsible to ensure that tested drugs in trials are safe and ready for mass production.

Role of a Drug Research Associate

As a Drug Research Associate, one is responsible to work on new and existing drugs. They usually work in tandem with the research and development team of pharmaceutical companies. They are required to conduct the drug trials with safety and security such that it does not harm the volunteers participating in the clinical trials.

Responsibilities of a Drug Research Associate

As a Drug Research Associate, one is responsible to:

  • Develop and prepare drug trial protocols for newly developed drugs
  • Present trial protocols to a steering committee and get approvals
  • Design data collection forms for gathering results from clinical drug trials
  • Coordinate with the ethics committee and ensure that they are safety and well-being of all trial subjects
  • Manage regulatory authority applications and approvals that oversee the research and marketing of new and existing drugs
  • Identify and assess the suitability of facilities to use as the clinical trial location
  • Coordinate with doctors, consultants or investigators on conducting the trials and trial location
  • Setup trial sites and ensure that all the trial materials are available
  • Prepare the reports about the trials conducted and send it to authorities
  • Keep updated about the latest trial regulations

Salary and Emoluments

  • The fresh B.Sc Clinical Research students will easily earn around 4 lakhs to 6 lakhs per annum as a drug research associate
  • The experienced professionals are paid more than freshers, they will be getting a salary of about 6 lakhs to 8 lakhs per annum

Clinical Pharmacist

The Clinical Pharmacists are responsible for the purchase and supply of medicines used in clinics and hospitals. As a clinical pharmacist one should have in-depth knowledge of medicines that are used in clinics and hospitals.

Role of the Clinical Pharmacist

Clinical Pharmacists are responsible to dispense prescriptions for patients. The Clinical Pharmacists are also involved in purchasing and quality testing of medicines and drugs. As a clinical pharmacist one is responsible to keep the well-stocked medicines every time and should be aware of all the medicines that are available.

Responsibilities of a Clinical Pharmacist

As a Clinical Pharmacist one is responsible to:

  • Check prescriptions for errors and ensure that they are all appropriate and safe for the patient
  • Provide advice and dosage of medicines and the most appropriate form of medication, that may be an injection, ointment, tablet or an inhaler to the patients
  • Discuss treatments with patients, relatives, community pharmacists and general practitioners
  • Make sure the medicines are stored securely
  • Supervise the work of fellow and junior staff members
  • Be well-versed with latest developments in the pharmacy industry contribute to research and development
  • Write guidelines for drug use within the clinics or hospital premises
  • Provide information on sale and expenditure of medicines and drugs
  • Prepare and quality check sterile medications of various intravenous medications

Salary and Emoluments

  • The fresh B.Sc Clinical Research students will easily earn around 5 lakhs to 7 lakhs per annum as a clinical pharmacists
  • The experienced professionals are paid more than the freshers, they will be getting a salary of about 7 lakhs to 10 lakhs per annum

Clinical Research Associate

As a clinical research associate, one is required to run clinical trials to test drugs for their effectiveness, risks and benefits. They are also responsible to ensure that they are safe and ready for mass production and are allowed to market

As a Clinical research associate, one is required to work on new and existing drugs and will usually work in pharmaceutical companies.

Role of a Regulatory Affairs Executive

As a regulatory Affairs executive one will act as a crucial link between the company and regulatory authorities. As a Regulatory Affairs executive, one is required to combine his/her scientific knowledge of scientific, legal and business issues and ensure that the products developed, manufactured or distributed by a range of companies meet the required legislations.

Responsibilities of a Regulatory Affairs Executive

As a Regulatory Affairs Executive one is needed to:

  • Ensure that a company’s products comply with the regulations of the regions where they want to distribute them
  • Keep up to date with national and international legislation guidelines and customer practices
  • Collect, collate and evaluate scientific data from a range of sources
  • Develop and write clear arguments and explanations for new product licences and licence renewals
  • Prepare submissions of licence variations and renewals to strict deadline
  • Monitor and set timelines for licence variations and renewal approvals
  • Work with specialised computer software and resources
  • Write clear, accessible product labels and patient information leaflets
  • Plan and develop product trials and interpret the trial data
  • Advice fellow scientists and manufactures on regulatory requirements
  • Provide strategic advice to senior management throughout the development of new product
  • Review company practices and provide advice on changes to systems
