What is B.Sc Anaesthesia?

The B.Sc Anaesthesia course is the 3-year degree programme that can be chosen soon after the completion of the PUC/12th or equivalent. The students should have studied any of the three subjects from the following: Physics, Chemistry, Biology/ Chemistry, Zoology, Botany in their PUC/12th /or equivalent with a minimum 45% aggregate in all the subjects.

The B.Sc Anaesthesia course is opted by the students who are interested to learn about anaesthesia and its components. The course equips the students with the techniques involved in anaesthesia administration, types of anaesthesia agents and also ensures them to closely monitor the patients under anaesthesia influence. The B.Sc Anaesthesia course helps the students to gain in-depth knowledge of the types of the anaesthesia equipment, types of anaesthesia agents, the techniques involved in administering the anaesthesia to the patients.

Roles of the B.Sc Anaesthesia students

The B.Sc anaesthesia students are required to perform multiple roles at a given point of time. They are required to assess the patient’s condition for anaesthesia administration and give them the correct amounts and dosage of the anaesthesia according to the patient’s conditions.

The B.Sc anaesthesia course also trains the students with in-depth knowledge of the anaesthesia equipment that has to be used for the patients. The students of B.Sc anaesthesia will also gain knowledge of the correct anaesthesia equipment for the specific patient. The B.Sc anaesthesia students will be learning about various subjects like fundamentals of the operation theatres, emergency wards, intensive care units (ICU), crucial cardiac-care units (CCU), trauma care centres. The students of B.Sc Anaesthesia will also understand the real-time monitoring of the patients that are under the influence of anaesthesia. The B.Sc anaesthesia students will be assisting the doctors and surgeons in operation theatres and emergency wards. The main aim of the B.Sc anaesthesia course is to equip the students with in-depth knowledge of the anaesthesia and anaesthesia equipment.

The course has both theoretical and practical ways for helping the students and developing them into skilled and successful anaesthetists. The B.Sc anaesthesia students are also taught to perform other tasks that are relevant to the operation theatres in the hospitals.

The B.Sc anaesthesia students will be working with doctors and nurses in the hospitals. They are responsible to prepare the patients for the surgery. They are required to administer the accurate anaesthetic agent with appropriate dosages to the patients. This process is extremely important and the anaesthetist should be very cautious about it. The minutest error may lead to a severe fatality like permanent disability or sometimes life. So, the anaesthetist should be extremely skilled and knowledgeable and should be extremely careful while administering the anaesthesia to the patients.

The typical day of the anaesthesia students will start by organising the list of the tasks to be done on that day. He/she has to ensure that the correct supply of the anaesthesia agents is available to the doctors that is according to the specific patients. On each day there may be more than one surgery and the anaesthesia may be different for different patients. So the anaesthesia professional has to organise accordingly. It is important for the anaesthesia professional to have a detailed understanding of the health condition of the patient. So that the proper anaesthesia is administered according to the patient condition.

The anaesthetist also interacts with the patients and tries to console them before the surgeries as they will be nervous and scared of the surgeries. They should help the patients to stay calm during the surgery and try to keep their heartbeat ratings in normalcy. The anaesthetists should have the skill of attention to detail, they have to be capable to address the crisis immediately during an emergency. The presence of mind is extremely important for B.Sc anaesthesia students. They should be very careful about the readings obtained from the machines and inform it immediately to the concerned surgeon during the surgery.

The B.Sc anaesthesia students are responsible to calibrate the anaesthesia equipment according to the patient’s needs under the proper guidance of the doctor. The anaesthetists are required to adjust the settings of the equipment so that the correct flow of the anaesthesia is maintained throughout the surgical procedure and keep the patient’s condition stable. The B.Sc anaesthesia students should be prepared for flexible timing and should be available at any point of the day or night in case of emergency. Sometimes they may be called in late at night and they have to be prepared for it.

Not all surgeries are successful; some may even result in loss of life. In case of the death on the operating table, the situation will be tough to handle. Sometimes it so happens the patient may be seen happily talking before the surgery but if unfortunately, the same patient dies on the surgical table. The people around him will experience severe emotional distress. Anaesthesia professionals may be exposed to varied emotions by seeing the dead patient. So the B.Sc anaesthesia students are given the training to handle the emotional roller coaster of the patient care.
