The ongoing Ukraine crisis has raised eyebrows of many in the international community about the medical education in India. It is very clear that many MBBS aspirants from India are choosing to go to countries like Ukraine for their MBBS studies over colleges in India. The war ridden Ukraine has shattered dreams of many such aspirants as their medical career is in lingo. With no confirmation of when the crisis will end in Ukraine. The Indian government is evacuating all the Indian students at a war pace under “Operation Ganga”.

The main reason why students are choosing MBBS in Ukraine over India is due to the shortage of medical seats and high fee structure for MBBS at private medical colleges of India. The data shows that the fee structure is extremely less in medical universities of Ukraine when compared to private Indian medical colleges. On an average a student will be spending only Rs 3 Lakhs to Rs 4 Lakhs for studying MBBS in Ukraine, while they have to shell out Rs. 20 Lakhs to Rs.30 Lakhs if they choose to study at private Indian medical colleges.

In the wake of this, the Chairman of the Mahindra Group, Mr. Anand Mahindra, expressed concerns over the shortfall of medical colleges in India. He further suggested considering establishing a medical studies institution on the campus of Mahindra University.

As per the central government data, around 90% of the 18,095 stranded Indian students in Ukraine are studying MBBS. These students walked miles to Poland and other neighbouring countries to reach the evacuation points. The Government of India managed to evacuate thousands of students under “Operation Ganga” but there are a few more students, who went to Ukraine to study medicine, still living in fear. The government has ensured that efforts are being made to evacuate every Indian student from Ukraine and will be brought back home safely.
