Every year thousands of students go abroad for the MBBS degree due to the shortage of seats in India and expensive fees for MBBS in private colleges. Many students go to foreign countries like Ukraine and many other countries, due to the affordable fee structure and quality education available in these foreign destinations.Â
As per the records from Ministry of Health Care there were about 88,120 undergraduate seats in medical colleges in India as of December 2021 and nearly about 15.44 lakhs candidates appeared for NEET UG 2021 Exam. As per the available official data about 8.70 lakhs candidates cleared the exam and only about 88,120 students were accommodated in merit quota.
According to the official websites about 43,310 MBBS seats available are in 284 government medical colleges in India and 41,065 MBBS seats are available in 269 private medical colleges. This clearly shows that there is a massive difference between the qualified candidates and the number of seats. This has further forced these students to go to abroad countries like Ukraine for studying MBBS.
According to experts the cost of the entire MBBS degree in countries like Ukraine and Russia is very less when compared to the costs in the private colleges of India. The experts further stated that, the students will be spending only Rs. 3 to Rs. 4 lakhs for medical studies in abroad countries where they are forced to spend nearly about Rs. 20 lakhs to Rs. 30 lakhs to study MBBS in private colleges of India. The quality of education at foreign medical universities is far better when compared to Indian private medical colleges.
On returning to India, these students will have to clear Foreign Medical Graduates Exam (FMGE) for a licence to practise medicine here. The abroad students have performed extremely well in the FMGE exams according to the data from the Ministry of Health Care. This has further encouraged other MBBS aspirants to study MBBS abroad instead of studying MBBS in India.
