The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued an online request for ideas for the creation of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on the six pillars of Indian Arctic Policy (IAP) using the SWAYAM platform at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Institutions can submit ideas to the SWAYAM platform at swayam.gov.in by May 15th, according to the UGC.
UGC has requested proposals on science and research, climate and environmental protection, economic and human development, transportation and connectivity, governance and international cooperation and national capacity building in the Arctic region in a letter to vice-chancellors of universities, directors of IITs and principals of all colleges.
Earth Sciences Minister Jitendra Singh launched the initiative in March of this year. "India's Arctic Policy will play a crucial role in preparing the country for a future when humankind's greatest issues, such as climate change, can be handled through collective will and effort," the UGC writes in its letter.
"Academics, the research community, business and industry will all be involved in implementing India's Arctic Policy." It is important to raise awareness among universities and colleges about the availability of courses, jobs and research possibilities in the field of Arctic/polar studies," the report stated.
According to the letter, the UGC made the decision to create course content on arctic or polar studies for inclusion on the SWAYAM platform based on a meeting conducted in the National Security Council Secretariat. "In this context, the UGC invites submissions from institutions," the letter stated.
President Pranab Mukherjee established the Swayam and Swayam Prabha platforms to make education more accessible to everyone. With the use of internet and satellite connectivity, the Swayam programme brings digital classrooms to the most rural parts of the country.
