  • The Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA 2020) committee received 1.6 lakh applications as of 16/08/20 evening, a 20%  increase over the previous year.
  • Experts said that the lack of clarity over NEET  and JEE-Main, for admissions to IITs and NITs and fewer admission under management quota could be the reasons for the increase in the number of applications.
  • The process began on 15/07/20 and candidates were given till midnight on 16/08/20 (Sunday ) to register applications online.
  • “Last year , they received 1,33,116 applications and this year it is 1,60,504 applications online. This is more than a 20% increase compared to the last year”- TNEA Officials said.

Important Dates:

Last date for uploading Certificates 20/08/20
Assigning Random Number 21/08/20
Publication of rank list 07/09/20
Counselling for Special Reservation Categories 10/09/20 - 14/09/20
Online Counselling 17/09/20 - 06/10/20
  • So far 1.3 lakh candidates paid the fees for online counselling while 90,000 have uploaded the relevant documents. The  certificate verification will take place at 52 TNEA facilitation centres (TFCs) across the state from 24/08/20. “This year, certificate verification process will be undertaken without the candidates”- an official added.
  • The Government should conduct engineering counselling only after medical counselling, an official said. “ There is a court order in this regard. If engineering admissions are conducted before medical admissions , hundreds of seats in top engineering colleges may fall vacant,”- he added.
  • A Principal from a City College said students also prefer institutions within their districts to avoid spending accommodation and mess bills. Many of them have applied for government counselling.
  • Due to the poor performance of State board students,  Colleges also expect the cut-off to lower by 4 to 5 marks this year.
