The National Medical Commission (NMC) in its official circular released on February 8th 2022, that “The medical courses done only on online mode from foreign universities including China are not recognised as a medical degree under NMC and students with such degrees are not eligible to apply for FMGE exam”.
The decision was taken in wake of an increasing number of students pursuing only online MBBS courses from different universities of China and even other foreign universities and were applying for Foreign Medical Graduate Exam (FMGE) exams. The decision comes from the NMC in the wake of many foreign universities including China announcing notices for online MBBS courses.
Due to Covid lockdowns many universities were announcing online MBBS courses for students, this has created a huge surge of students enrolling to such online MBBS courses from foreign universities. The NMC further stated that such only online MBBS courses are not recognised under NMC and students with such only online MBBS courses will not be eligible to apply for FMGE exams also.
The official circular stated that the students have to refer in detail the rules and regulations mentioned in the FMGE circular. The FMGE is a licensure examination conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) for students with medical degrees from universities abroad. The students with abroad medical degrees and are wishing to practice medicine in India are mandatorily required to qualify FMGE exam. Without qualifying the FMGE exam no student with abroad medical degree is allowed to practice as a physician in India.
