Karnataka Minister for Higher Education Mr. CN Ashwath Narayan said that the students can choose any regional languages as Open Elective after the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The minister further stated that the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP-2020) will further strengthen Indian languages including Kannada and excellent opportunities will be provided for all the students who choose any regional language as an open elective.

The minister further clarified that there will be no threat to Kannada or any other regional language with the implementation of NEP. It is mandatory to study Kannada (In case of Karnataka) and other regional languages according to the respective states in the 2 years of the degree course. It is mandatory for Karnataka students to study Kannada, while the students from other states can choose their desired regional language as an open elective. The students will also be given an opportunity to select a language as an open elective according to their choice.

The minister further explained that NEP 2020 will bring about a change in the way of assessment and accordingly in the teaching-learning process. The NEP policy also aspires to impart all the required knowledge and skills as a part of studies itself.
