The Karnataka government under “Samagra Shikshana Karnataka” scheme, has started preparing a module for value-based education for all the students in schools. The state government plans to implement this scheme from this academic year and the plan is to have value-based education classes once a week for class 1-10 students starting from this academic year.
The officials stated that the lessons will be based on moral values that will be taught through stories and activities. There may not be any textbooks for this. The department is working with two NGOs and 25 teachers, involved across all grades, to prepare the module.
The officials further stated that the values that have to be imparted are now being identified for each age group. "The module consists of activities that will ingrain moral values in children. For instance, a primary school child will be told a story that has a moral like gratitude. This will be followed by activities like students recalling their actions and deeds, or being encouraged to do more. The contents change with the age group. There will be topics on drug abuse for high school students," an official said.
Education Ministry officials stated that the Karnataka model is not similar to those of other states. We are trying to evolve a module with the help of NGOs, who already have the pedagogy for it and are running classes in some schools.
