In the major breakthrough for education in Karnataka, nearly 122 drop-outs have been brought back to campus in Mangalore under 'Samagra Shiksha Karnataka' scheme. The officials stated that dropout rates had tripled since the pandemic, compared to pre-pandemic levels and that all the children were of the migrant population.
Ms. Manjula KL, deputy project coordinator, Samagra Shiksha Karnataka, Mangalore stated that the department has worked hard enough to bring all these dropouts back to campus. The department identified 122 dropouts in the last academic year, including 59 girls. Among them, 47 were migrants.Â
She further added that the majority of dropouts are from taluks other than Mangaluru. While Bantwal taluk had the most (36), it was followed by Moodabidre (28), Puttur (20), and Belthangady (19). Despite having a sizable population, including migrant workers, the blocks Mangaluru North and Mangaluru South recorded only 15 dropouts. She further added that in 2019-20, Mangaluru South had 15 dropouts, the highest in the district.
Ms. Renny D'Souza, chairman of the Dakshina Kannada Child Welfare Committee, stated that one of the major reasons for dropout is that children who have stayed at home for two years are unable to cope with academics so they stop attending school.
