Mr. Virendra Kumar, the Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, has inaugurated the SRESHTA (Scheme for Residential Education for Kids in High Schools in Targeted Areas); The main aim of this scheme is to give excellent education and opportunity to the poorest SC students across all the schools.

Nearly 177 private schools have been designated as part of the initiative, with 1,300 spaces in 9th Class and 1,700 seats in 11th Class  are reserved for these kids under the SRESTHA scheme. SC students from all states and union territories (UTs) are chosen through a transparent mechanism called the National Entrance Test for SRESHTA (NETS), which is administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

The students whose parent’s annual income is not more than Rs 2.5 lakh are eligible for this scheme. Under the SRESTHA scheme, a scholarship will be provided for all the eligible beneficiaries. The scholarship covers the school fees (including tuition fees) and hostel fees (including mess charges).

The scholarship amount is Rs 1 lakh per year for 9th class students and a scholarship of Rs 1.10 lakh for 10th class, Rs 1.25 lakh for 11th Class and Rs 1.35 lakh for 12th Class students will be provided under this SRESHTA scheme.
