The government engineering colleges in Karnataka are not certified by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) certification according to the latest reports from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
The main reason for this is the lack of skilled teachers in all the 14 government engineering colleges in the state while applying for NBA certification. The student-faculty ratio should be 1:15, but government colleges do not even have permanent staff. One of the principals of the government college stated that the majority of the colleges are run by guest lecturers and they are not eligible to apply for NBA certification.
The latest data from Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) shows that out of the 229 sanctioned ‘A’ category posts, about 120 are vacant in government engineering colleges, and in Category ‘B” 182 of the 417 posts are vacant in all the government colleges of Karnataka.
Prof Karisiddappa, vice-chancellor of VTU stated that the NBA certification is considered prestigious. It not only helps colleges get autonomy but it is also one of the main criteria for engineering colleges to get the TEQIP (Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme) grant from the Union government. He also further stated that It is mandatory for every engineering college to get NBA certification from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.”
The Higher Education Department stated that under its Super 30 programme it is aiming to improve infrastructure in engineering colleges. This will help engineering colleges get NBA certification. The higher education department officials further stated that all the engineering colleges have time until 2024 to get the NBA as per the latest order from AICTE. The government will ensure that all government engineering colleges will get NBA-certified as soon as possible.
