MD Microbiology (Doctor of Medicine in Microbiology)
MD Microbiologist Doctors are generally known as Medical Microbiologists. The medical microbiologists acquire both clinical skills and laboratory knowledge in their MD course. In medical microbiology, the main focus is on the skills and knowledge relating to microbial infections that are caused in humans.
Medical microbiologists provide services to aid the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases and help ensure the safety of those at risk of acquiring infectious diseases, both in hospitals and communities. The medical microbiologists are required to give advice to the patients suffering from infectious diseases. They also prescribe the patients to undergo diagnosis by taking up proper tests. Medical microbiologists provide advice regarding the interpretation of results and the appropriateness of further investigations and antibiotic treatments.
Medical microbiologists also play a key role in controlling the spread of infectious diseases. They work in hospitals, infection control teams to reduce the spread of infections in hospitals including pandemics like Covid-19, SARS, MRSA, Ebola Virus, HIV etc in communities.
They are responsible to monitor the patterns of infectious diseases and reporting of unusual occurrences of infections. They work in infection control activities along with nurses and other healthcare professionals in hospitals.

EligibilityThe candidate should be a graduate in Medicine (M.B.B.S)from any university recognised by the Medical Council of India. The candidate should have completed satisfactorily the Rotating compulsory internship of one year in an institution recognised by the Medical Council of India he candidate should have obtained permanent Registration of any State Medical Council. No candidate shall be admitted to any post graduate degree / diploma course unless the candidate has obtained and produced the eligibility certificate issued by the University.

Government Private Seats(G) - INR. 1,02,786 to INR. 7,13,780 per annum

NRI/Others (Q) - INR. 1,02,785 to INR. 90,15,500 per annum

Admission Process:

Candidates seeking admission to MD should mandatorily qualify NEET-PG Exam. The NEET qualified students are required to undergo two types of counselling. 

1.The students seeking admission to medical colleges affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) should undergo the counselling conducted by the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA).

2.The students seeking admission to deemed universities should undergo counselling conducted by Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).

They are responsible for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the spread of infections in hospitals and communities (best example is CoronaVirus). Their main aim is to provide treatments for pandemic and epidemic diseases and ensure that the disease is not spread in communities and result in a disaster.

Earnings: As a Medical Microbiology & Virology doctor one will be earning around 6 lakhs to 12 lakhs per annum.

Infectious Diseases Doctor: As an infectious disease doctor one is required to investigate and treat infections caused by many micro-organisms like bacteria, virus, protozoa and fungi. The infectious disease doctors have combined skills of clinical and laboratory that helps them to diagnose and provide effective treatment for a wide range of infections in both acute and chronic patients. They deal with many infections that are related to bone, HIV, pneumonia and viral hepatitis. They provide treatments for many diseases like corona, cholera, dengue, diphtheria, dysentery, Ebola, malaria, meningitis, sepsis etc.

Earnings: As an Infectious Disease doctor one will be earning around 8 lakhs to 15 lakhs per annum.

Chemical Pathologist: Chemical pathologists are qualified doctors who combine practical laboratory and clinical skills. They use biochemical laboratory tests to diagnose diseases and manage the patients. The chemical pathologists have a detailed understanding of biochemical processes and changes that occur in diseases. They are also responsible to run and manage biochemistry laboratories in hospitals or in diagnostic centres. They will be doing analysis of hundreds of samples of patients per day and reporting the test results of the patients and referring them to specialists if required. They will be working with endocrinologists to oversee specialist tests and help with the development and interpretation of hormone tests.

Earnings: As a Chemical Pathologist one will be earning around 5 lakhs to 10 lakhs per annum.

Haematology Doctor: The Haematology doctors diagnose and clinically manage disorders of the blood and bone marrow. They also provide clinical support for the haematology diagnostic laboratories and blood banks. They undertake the care of outpatients and inpatients, provide advisory and consultancy services to all the hospital specialists and general practitioners and also manage diagnostic laboratories. They provide clinical interpretation of laboratory data and morphology of blood and bone marrow. The haematology doctors will be working with patients of all ages and they manage both benign and malignant conditions.

Earnings: As a Haematology Doctor one will be earning around 6 lakhs to 12 lakhs per annum.

Histopathology Doctors: The histopathology doctors are responsible to diagnose and study disease using expert medical interpretation of cells and tissue samples. They have the expertise to identify and determine the cause of death by performing autopsies on human bodies. They are also responsible to determine the stage of cancers through staging and grading of tumours. The histopathologists work in partnership with both laboratory scientists and doctors from other specialities. They have an in-depth knowledge of both pathological and clinical aspects of diseases. They will form a part of a multi-disciplinary team assessing cancer patients and planning their further investigation and treatments.  

Earnings: As a Histopathology doctor one will be earning around 8 lakhs to 10 lakhs per annum.
