What is B.Sc Radiotherapy?

The B.Sc radiotherapy is the branch of allied health sciences. The B.Sc radiotherapy is the 3-year degree course that can be done after the completion of the PUC/12th or equivalent. The students who are interested to join B.Sc radiotherapy should have studied any three of the following subjects Physics, Chemistry, Biology/ Chemistry, Zoology, Botany in their PUC/12th or equivalent from the recognized central and state board of India and abroad.

Radiotherapy is the branch of medicine that deals with cancer care and its treatments. Radiotherapy is one of the treatment lines for cancer and tumours. The radiotherapy is done on the patients suffering from cancers and tumours. The process involves the deposition of the energy on the targeted cells that are defective and destroy them. Radiotherapy can be used as the primary treatment option for cancer patients.

Career Prospects after B.Sc Radiotherapy

B.Sc radiotherapy students can find ample job opportunities in the healthcare sector. The B.Sc radiotherapy students are hired in different positions across various hospitals, nursing homes, diagnostic centres etc.

Some of the roles available after B.Sc Radiotherapy are:

Diagnostic Radiographer

The Diagnostic Radiographer is the professional who is responsible for diagnosing the patient’s body by looking at the internal organs using radiographic imaging technology. They are hired in diagnostic centres, hospitals, nursing homes etc.

Radiation Therapist

The radiation therapist is the person who will be using radiation techniques on the body of the patients to cure cancer and tumour cells using sophisticated equipment. They will be targeting the radio waves towards the defective tissue or cells in the human body and try to destroy them.

X-Ray Technician

The X-Ray technicians are the professionals who are responsible to use various imaging techniques to diagnose the problems of the internal organs. They will pass the radiation waves to the internal organs of the human body and try to construct the internal images. The X-Ray technicians are usually required to find out internal bone fractures, internal bleedings, internal haemorrhages etc.

Nuclear Medicine Technologist

Nuclear medicine technology is highly specialised in the field of radiotherapy. The primary focus of nuclear medicine technologists is to identify the body functionality and response to the various diseases occurring. The nuclear medicine technologists are responsible for treating the cancers and tumours in the body by using radioactive materials called radiopharmaceuticals. They induce the patients with a small amount of these radiopharmaceuticals towards the targeted areas or locations. Once they reach the targeted areas the nuclear medicine technologists with the help of the sophisticated equipment will try to create the image of the particular area and try to analyse the condition. They are also required to destroy the defective cells using the radiopharmaceuticals.

Radiation Oncologist

The radiation oncologists are responsible to monitor the patients who are suffering from cancers and tumours. They are also responsible to create internal images of the internal organs by doing regular radiotherapy sessions. They are required to organise images available after every session. They should analyse the defective tumours and look for the growth factors on a regular basis.

Radiation Therapy Technologist

The radiation therapy technologists are mainly responsible to treat the patients suffering from cancer. They are required to use the sophisticated radiation equipment on the patients and try to administer the radiation on the patients and destroy the tumours and cancerous cells.

MRI Technician

The MRI technician is responsible to administer image scans on the patients to produce quality images of the specific part of the body. They are responsible to perform MRI scans on the patients and try to diagnose the defective body tissues and cells. The images obtained from the MRI machine helps the doctors to initiate the proper treatment to the patients. MRI technicians usually work in brain and neurological related diseases in human beings. Using the equipment they measure the brain impulses in the patients and try to find out the cause of the disease.

Salary Package

The average B.Sc Radiotherapy students will be earning the average salary from 5 lakhs to 10 lakhs per annum. The average B.Sc Radiotherapy students will be earning about 4 lakhs per annum. The salary varies according to the job location. The salary exponentially increases as the skills and experience gained in their careers.

Placement Opportunities

The B.Sc Radiotherapy students are hired in the hospitals and diagnostic centres. They are hired in government hospitals, private hospitals, oncology hospitals, nursing homes, cancer care centres, diagnostic centres, community health centres etc.
