Inside the Paper - Types of Questions Asked in Karnataka PGCET 2025 (MCA)

The Karnataka Post Graduate Common Entrance Test (PGCET) 2025 is a well-recognized state-level entrance exam organized by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) for candidates seeking admission to different postgraduate programs, including MBA, MCA, M.E., M.Tech and M.Arch, at participating institutions across Karnataka.

For candidates who want to join a Master of Computer Applications (MCA) program, the PGCET tests a candidate's analytical ability, logical reasoning, basic computer awareness and basic mathematics. For candidates to understand the structure, format, and level of difficulty of the questions, we are including a set of sample questions based on questions from the previous year's MCA Question paper.

The sample questions are designed to provide applicants with an insight into what to expect and to assist with preparation for the exam. Overall, by sampling these questions, aspirants can have a better understanding of the overall and specific types of questions being asked, the level of conceptual clarity needed, and the type of topics a candidate will want to spend time studying.

Sample Question 1

The center of the ellipse ((x + y - 2) ^ 2)/9 + ((x - y) ^ 2)/16 = 1

A. (0, 0)

B. (0, 1)

C. (1, 0)

D. (1, 1)

Correct Answer: C. (1, 0)

Solution: To determine the center of the ellipse described by the equation (x+y−2)29+(x−y)216=1\frac{(x+y-2)^2}{9} + \frac{(x-y)^2}{16} = 19(x+y−2)2+16(x−y)2=1, we identify it as having the standard form (x−h)2a2+(y−k)2b2=1\frac{(x-h)^2}{a^2} + \frac{(y-k)^2}{b^2} = 1a2(x−h)2+b2(y−k)2=1. From the given equation:

● (x+y−2)29\frac{(x+y-2)^2}{9}9(x+y−2)2 corresponds to (x−h)2a2\frac{(x-h)^2}{a^2}a2(x−h)2

● (x−y)216\frac{(x-y)^2}{16}16(x−y)2 corresponds to (y−k)2b2\frac{(y-k)^2}{b^2}b2(y−k)2 The center (h,k)(h, k)(h,k) of the ellipse is found to be (1,0)(1, 0)(1,0). Therefore, the center of the ellipse is (1,0)(1, 0)(1,0).

Sample Question 2

If (9 ^ 4) ^ 2 = 3 deg then the value of x is

A. 14

B. 16

C. 15

D. 17

Correct Answer: B. 16

Solution: To find the value of x given that (9 ^ 4) ^ 2 = 3 deg,

we need to simplify the left-hand side first:

(9 ^ 4) ^ 2 = 3 deg Calculate 9 ^ 4: 9 ^ 4 = 6561 Now, (9 ^ 4) ^ 2 = 6561 ^ 2

Calculate 6561 ^ 2: 6561 ^ 2 = 43046721

Therefore, 3 deg = 43046721 So, x = 16.

Thus, the correct answer is B. 16.

Sample Question 3

Two lines are said to be parallel if the difference of their slope is

A. -1

B. 0

C. 1

D. 2

Correct Answer: B. 0

Solution: Two lines are parallel if they have the same slope.

Mathematically, the condition for two lines y=m1x+c1y = m_1x + c_1y=m1x+c1 and y=m2x+c2y = m_2x + c_2y=m2x+c2 to be parallel is m1=m2m_1 = m_2m1=m2. Therefore, the difference of their slopes m1−m2m_1 - m_2m1−m2 is 000.

Sample Question 1

Which service allows a user to login to another computer via Internet?

A. FTP

B. Telnet

C. e-mail

D. SMPT

Correct Answer: B. Telnet

Solution: Telnet is a network protocol that allows a user to log in to another computer over the internet or a local network.

By using Telnet, users can access the resources of a remote computer as if they were directly connected to it. This service provides a command-line interface on the remote machine, enabling the execution of commands and the management of files.

● FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is used for transferring files between computers on a network.

● E-mail is used for sending and receiving electronic messages.

● SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is a protocol for sending emails.

Sample Question 2

Which of the following is not a system software?

A. Operating system

B. Assembler

C. SQL

D. Compiler

Correct Answer: C. SQL

Solution: System software refers to the software designed to provide a platform for other software. Examples of system software include operating systems, assemblers, and compilers.

● Operating System: A system software that manages computer hardware and software resources and provides common services for computer programs.

● Assembler: A system software that translates assembly language into machine code.

● Compiler: A system software that translates code written in a high-level programming language into machine code. SQL (Structured Query Language), on the other hand, is not a system software.

It is a domain-specific language used in programming and designed for managing data held in a relational database management system (RDBMS).

Sample Question 3

URL stands for

A. Uniform Resource Link

B. Universal Resource Link

C. Uniform Resource Locator

Sample Question 1

Average scores of three batsmen A, B,C are 40, 45 and 55 respectively and their standard deviations are 9, 11, 16 respectively. Which batsman is more consistent?

A. A

B. B

C. C

D. A, B and C

Correct Answer: A. A

Solution: To determine which batsman is more consistent, we look at the coefficient of variation (CV) for each batsman. The coefficient of variation is calculated as follows: CV=Standard DeviationMean×100\text{CV} = \frac{\text{Standard Deviation}}{\text{Mean}} \times 100CV=MeanStandard Deviation×100 Calculate the CV for each batsman:

● For batsman A: CVA=940×100=22.5%\text{CV}_A = \frac{9}{40} \times 100 = 22.5\%CVA=409×100=22.5%

● For batsman B: CVB=1145×100≈24.44%\text{CV}_B = \frac{11}{45} \times 100 \approx 24.44\%CVB=4511×100≈24.44%

● For batsman C: CVC=1655×100≈29.09%\text{CV}_C = \frac{16}{55} \times 100 \approx 29.09\%CVC=5516×100≈29.09% The lower the coefficient of variation, the more consistent the batsman. Comparing the CVs:

● Batsman A: 22.5%

● Batsman B: 24.44%

● Batsman C: 29.09%

Therefore, batsman A has the lowest coefficient of variation and is the most consistent. So, the correct answer is: A
