Look around. Things have changed, including goals in the workplace.
There was a time when people thought the only way to “be a success” was to become a doctor, an engineer, or a banker sitting in front of a desk, wearing a suit, and experiencing high stress.
Well, not anymore.
The present generation is doing it differently. Gen Z and Gen Alpha don't connect with the traditional career. They're creating their own pathway for success, and they're doing it in oversized hoodies, thrifted jackets, sneakers, and sometimes using their own designs.
They're not just choosing the normal. And that’s cool!
Choosing creativity over comfort. Choosing to embrace self-expression. Following passion. Making things that express who you are. And one of the most exciting ways to do this? Fashion Designing.
Because nowadays fashion isn't just about wearing pretty clothes - it is about making a statement with what you wear. It is art. It is identity. It is daring. And it is full of potential.
Why Fashion, and Why Now?
Fashion is not simply models walking up and down a runway or trying on expensive clothes. For many, especially this generation, fashion can be a way to define oneself. What we wear can reflect our attitude and personality, express our culture -- and at times our beliefs. Fashion has allowed people to share their story without using words.
This generation uses clothing to speak about what matters to them. Some want to help the environment and therefore choose to wear sustainable fashion. Some care about inclusion and therefore design and wear gender neutral clothing. Others who want to celebrate their heritage are able to weave their culture into their style of dress.
The Shift: From Degrees to Dreams
Just a few years ago, saying “I want to be a fashion designer” would get some strange looks (especially at family gatherings). People would ask, “But what about job security?" and "Why not something more stable?”
But today? That mindset is changing fast. It's no longer a hobby; fashion design is now a career path and it continues to grow each year.
Here's why students are choosing fashion design instead of traditional careers:
- They express themselves using form, colour, and style.
- They like being creative and don't want to be bound by a 9-5 Job.
- Fashion allows them to express different stories through fabric, culture and ideas.
- They want to know more about streams that captivate them, like the history of fashion, trend forecasting, styling, and sustainability.
- The top fashion designing colleges, like BA Honours in Fashion Designing and , offer everything from design acumen, fashion business, and creative skills.
