A brief about B.Sc Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT)

The B.Sc Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) is the 3-year degree programme that can be opted by the students after the completion of their PUC/12th or equivalent. The students who are interested to join the B.Sc Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) should have studied any of the following three subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology/ Chemistry, Zoology, Botany in their PUC/12th or equivalent from the recognised central or any state board across India and abroad.

The B.Sc Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) mainly aims to train the students on various techniques that are necessary to detect the diseases in the human body. They are trained to conduct the examinations of various samples and specimens of the patients.

The B.Sc Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) students are also trained to handle and maintain various medical equipment like CT Scan Machine, MRI Machine, X-Ray Machine etc. They are also trained to prepare the reports based on the observations made by them.

The doctors provide the treatments to the patients solely based on the reports given by the B.Sc Medical Laboratory Technology(MLT) students. So, the students of B.Sc Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) should be very careful while preparing the reports and should communicate the exact cause for the ailment in the patients.

Medical/Clinical Technician

Roles and Responsibilities: The Medical/Clinical technicians work with integrated systems and perform the diagnostic tests in the medical laboratories. They are seen working in hospitals, clinics, diagnostic centres etc. Some of them are seen working in companies that produce medical equipment.

The Medical/Clinical Technicians perform a variety of tasks. They collect the samples and specimens for the tests from the patients. They subject the samples and specimens to various tests using equipment to diagnose the disease or ailment in the patients. They are responsible to record the findings and prepare the reports about their observations. Then they will send the reports for the in-house pathologists for reviews and assist them in preparing the accurate reports. They are also responsible to sterilize and maintain the lab equipment used for the tests.

Cytogenetic Technician

Roles and Responsibilities: The cytogenetic technician deals with the analysis of the living cells in the living organisms. They analyse the gene structure, genetic elements inside the cells. They are also responsible to analyse the chromosomes and other genetic materials like RNA, DNA etc. They are required to maintain the detailed notes of the observations from each sample. They are responsible to detect the genetic abnormality in the living organisms and suggest the right treatment to the patients and rectify the anomaly. They are required to inform the observations made by them to the lab manager. The physicians will prescribe the treatment based on the reports of the cytogenetic technicians.

Key skills required: Some of the key skills required are:

  • Ability to set up and operate the sophisticated laboratory equipment
  • Should possess analytical or scientific competencies
  • Should have proficiency in database management and query software
  • Eye to detail

Histotechnician

Roles and Responsibilities: The histotechnicians will be studying the minute structures of biological materials. They determine the structural and functional relationship between biological materials. They will be analysing the specimens by using biopsy methods and find out the cause of the ailments. They are trained to determine the cancerous tissues and cells in human beings with the right equipment

Key Skills required: The histotechnicians are required to possess some of the skills like:

  • Capacity to analyse difficult problems
  • Capability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to make sound decisions
  • Efficient Management of the time
  • Capacity to manipulate small and micro tools
  • Ability to meet the deadlines
  • They should have an excellent understanding of the tissue staining protocols

Pathologist Assistant

Roles and Responsibilities: The main role of the pathologist assistant is to help to prepare the samples and tissues, blood for diagnosing in the sterile laboratory. They are required to dissect the tissues for autopsy and diagnose the ailments. Sometimes they may be required to do forensic tests on the dead bodies to find out the real culprit and cause of death in case of any suspicious death cases.

Key Skills required: The pathologist assistants are required to possess some of the important skills such as:

  • They should have active listening skills
  • They should have good analytical and scientific thinking skills
  • They should have competency in information ordering
  • They should have proficiency in using information systems software

Nuclear Medicine Technologist

Roles and Responsibilities: The main role of the nuclear medicine technologist is to examine the internal parts of the human body by radio-imaging techniques. The nuclear medicine technologist gives the protected and small doses of radioactive medicine to the patients under the direction of the certified physicians. They then record the images of the organs using specialised equipment. This test is done to obtain the internal images of the abnormalities in the organs of the human body. The radioactive medicines are given to the patients in various forms like oral tablets or inhalation or through injections.

Key Skills required: The Nuclear Medicine Technologist are required to have the following skills like:

  • Ability to work in the team as a team member
  • Capable to give attention to detail and accurate observation and recording skills
  • Should have excellent decision-making skills
  • Should have strong communication skills
  • Should have the technical expertise to handle the radioactive materials which are typically dangerous

The average salary package of the B.Sc Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) ranges from 4 lakhs to 8 lakhs per annum.
