What is MBBS?

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is the 5.5 year (4.5- academic year+ 1- year internship) academic programme that can be done after the completion of the PUC/12th or equivalent. The students who are interested to join MBBS should have completed their PUC/12th or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Biology with 50% aggregate and should also qualify the NEET entrance exam. The students are required to undergo counselling sessions to choose their medical seats.

The students can also get direct admissions under management quota for the MBBS seats in their desired colleges. The MBBS degree is the combination of two degrees that is a bachelor of medicine, bachelor of surgery. The MBBS students will be earning both the degrees during their MBBS degree. The MBBS degree is done to become the doctor and serve humanity by giving treatment to the patients suffering from various diseases and ailments. The students who are interested in serving society can choose to become doctors by completing the MBBS degree.

Career Scope after MBBS

Many students after the completion of their MBBS will be confused about choosing their specialisations in their MD or MS degrees. There are several specialisations available for the MBBS students. Some may choose to start practicing after the completion of MBBS, while many of them choose to do MD or MS courses after MBBS. This article tries to explain some of the specialisations that help the MBBS students to have a better idea of different specialisations available in MS or MD courses. Some of the specialisations available after MBBS are:

General Surgery

The general surgery specialisation deals with the treatment and surgery of the different abdominal parts like stomach, liver, colon, pancreas, intestines etc of the human body. The general surgery prepares the students on various treatment procedures and surgical procedures that are related to the internal parts of the human body. They will develop the skills and expertise to perform surgery and treatments on the patients suffering from abdominal disorders. They are also capable of performing surgery in various areas like appendix, hernia, piles etc. So, there is a good scope and demand for General Surgery specialists in the medical field.

General Medicine

The MBBS students who specialise in general medicine are termed as general physicians and doctors. They have the ability to diagnose various medical related problems of the patients and prescribe the proper medicine and also prescribe further treatment. They are capable of providing general treatments for normal ailments like fevers, infections, etc. The community is prone to various diseases like normal fevers, colds and infections, the general medicine specialists are capable to diagnose them and prescribe the appropriate medicines so that they will be cured. So, there is a fair amount of demand for general medicine specialists. They can work in hospitals, polyclinics, nursing homes etc. They can even start their clinics and practice general medicine. Cardiology

Cardiology deals with the treatment of heart diseases and ailments. The cardiologists have the ability to diagnose any heart-related problems and provide accurate treatment for curing. They are also capable of performing major surgeries like open-heart surgery, angioplasty and many other life-threatening heart diseases. The cardiologists assess the condition of the heart functioning and prescribe the medicine accordingly. The cardiologists will work with the patients with advanced heart failure cases and those require transplants. The cardiologists are also required to implant pacemakers to the patients suffering from heart diseases. The increase in non-communicable diseases like high blood pressure, low pressure, diabetes etc among the people has resulted in the development of many heart diseases. The demand for cardiologists has increased in the last decade and it continues to grow in the future. So, the cardiologists are required in large demand. They can join hospitals as consultants or they can choose to practice in their clinics. They can also choose to join as professors in the medical colleges.

Paediatrics

Paediatrics is related to medical issues related to children. The paediatric specialists are capable of diagnosing the medical conditions in the children. The specialisations enable them to understand the ailments of the children and treat them accordingly. The paediatrics are in great demand as the parents will not take any risk when it comes to the health of the children. Some ailments can only be recognised at a very young age and proper treatment can be given, so that the ailment gets cured even at the initial stage. This is possible only with paediatrics specialists and there is always a great demand for children specialists. They can join as consultants in hospitals or they can start their practice in the clinics. They can also take up teaching by joining medical colleges.

Orthopaedics

The orthopaedic doctors specialise in providing treatments for bone diseases and disorders. The orthopaedic surgeons mainly use surgical and non-surgical means to provide treatment to patients with bone disorders. They treat bone fractures and perform bone surgeries if required. They treat various ailments related to the skeletal system of the human body. The orthopaedic surgeons often treat the patients who suffered from bone injuries in the trauma of some kind; they also treat the congenital conditions, bone cancers, degenerative diseases. The orthopaedic surgeons also treat the sports injuries, backbone injury etc. The increased number of various orthopaedic patients due to various reasons has created a demand for orthopaedic surgeons. They can join as visiting doctors in the hospitals and or may even practice in their clinics. They also have the option to join as lecturers in medical colleges.

Neurosurgery

The neurosurgery specialises in the diagnosing and treatment for the neurological disorders of the human nervous system. Neurosurgery includes the treatment of the brain and peripheral nerves, spinal cord of the human body. The neurosurgeons can join as consultants in the mental health centres, multi-speciality hospitals etc. They can choose to practice in clinics or join as lectures in the medical colleges.

Obstetrics and Gynaecology

The gynaecologists are the doctors who will be dealing with the female reproductive systems and pregnancy. They will be taking care of pregnant women until the delivery. They will be treating the medical issues related to the female reproductive system. They perform caesareans, normal delivery, Hysteroscopies, Laparoscopes etc. The gynaecologists are high in demand due to the increase of pregnant women. Pregnancy is the most important phase of life and no pregnant women will take chances during the pregnancy periods. So, there is a fair amount of demand for gynaecologists. They can join as visiting doctors in various hospitals. They can also practice in clinics, fertility centres. They can also join as lecturers in medical colleges.

Ophthalmologists

Ophthalmologists are the eye specialists who completely treat eye disorders in the people. They are capable of diagnosing eye disorders and provide the accurate treatments to the eye disorders. The ophthalmologists are specially trained to provide treatment for different eye disorders, eye infections. The Ophthalmologists also prescribe the glasses and contact lenses for various types of eye disorders. The eye is an important part of the human body and there is a huge demand for eye specialists. Eye problems can be seen irrespective of the age and ophthalmologists are essential to cure them. The ophthalmologists can join as consultant doctors in various hospitals, eye hospitals, eye clinics etc. They can also start their practice in eye clinics and can also join as professors in the medical colleges.

Salary Package

The average MBBS student will be easily earning around 5 lakhs to 12 lakhs per annum. The average fresher MBBS graduate will be earning about 5 lakhs per annum. The salary is relatively more for specialists. The salary increases according to the skills gained and experience counted in the career.

The placement opportunities are ample for MBBS students. Especially the placement opportunities increase according to the specialisations chosen. All the specialisations are equally important and equally valued. Every specialisation has its demand and there is no limit for job opportunities in the medical field.
