Application Analyst

An Application Analyst is the one who has to maintain IT services and should engage in face-to-face correspondence with users that need technical support.

Role of an Application Analyst

As an application analyst one will oversee practices and processes to ensure integrity, safety and availability of all data and applications as part of an organisation’s information systems. As an application analyst one will ensure that processes that are needed to function a business  are running smoothly without any glitch.

Responsibilities of an Application Analyst

As an application analyst one is needed to:

  • Identify organisational need for development of new applications
  • Prepare technical specification and roadmaps for software development
  • Perform routine systems backup and upgrade regularly
  • Installation of new operating systems and releases
  • Provide instructions and training to fellow mates whenever necessary
  • Monitoring, recording and responding to requests for support
  • Investigating and diagnosing system faults and errors
  • Resolving technical issues related to networking and software
  • Analyse the error trends and work towards reducing or minimising downtime

Application Developer

Application Developers are required to make computers to perform specific tasks, based on their client specifications.

Role of an Application Developer

As an application developer, one is required to translate software requirements into workable programming code and maintain and develop programmes for use in business. They usually work within the specific development fields such as mobile, phone applications, accounting software, office suites or graphics software. They are required to have in-depth knowledge of at least one computer language

Responsibilities of an Application Developer

As an application developer one is required to:

  • Establish detailed programme specifications through discussions with clients
  • Clarify the actions that the programme is intended to perform
  • Breakdown the programming specifications into simple elements and translate the logic into the programming code
  • Test sample data sets to check the output from the programme works as intended
  • Install the programmes into production after rigorous software testing
  • Device possible solutions for the anticipated problems
  • Evaluate and increase the effectiveness of the programme
  • Tweak the programme to new requirements as necessary

Database administrators use specialised software to organise and maintain secure databases. They usually work with data storage, data retrieval and data recovery mechanisms in an organisation.

The main responsibility of a database administrator is to maintain the performance integrity and security of the database. As a database administrator one will be involved in planning and development of databases, as well as in troubleshooting any issues on behalf of the users.

Responsibilities of a Database Administrator 

As a Database Administrator one is responsible to:

  • Establish the needs of users and monitor user access and security
  • Monitor the performance and manage relevant parameters and provide fast responses to front-end users
  • Map out the conceptual design for a planned database
  • Consider both back-end organisation of data and front-end accessibility for end-users
  • Refine the logical design so that it can be translated into specific data model
  • Further refine the physical design to meet system storage requirements
  • Install and test new versions of the database management system
  • Maintain data standards, including adherence to the data protection act
  • Control access permissions and privileges
  • Ensure that storage and archiving procedures are functioning properly
  • Carry out capacity planning
  • Communicate regularly with technical, application and operational staff to ensure database, integrity and security
  • Manage the security and disaster recovery aspects of a database

Network systems administrator

The role of the network systems administrator is to provide hardware and software support for an organization.

They are required to perform routine check-ups of the hardware systems. They are also responsible to maintain data security of the software and hardware. They are responsible to perform frequent data backups, disaster recovery operations in case of emergency.

Responsibilities of Network Systems Administrator

As a network systems administrator one is responsible to:

  • Establish the networking environment by designing systems configurations directing system installation and defining documenting and enforcing system standards
  • Design and implement new solutions and improve resilience of the current environment
  • Maximise network performance by monitoring performance, troubleshooting network problems and outages, scheduling upgrades and collaborating with network architects on network optimisation
  • Undertake data network fault investigations in local and wide area network environments using information from multiple sources
  • Secure network systems by establishing and enforcing policies and defining and monitoring access
  • Support and administer firewall environments in line with IT security policy
  • Report network operational status by gathering and prioritising information and managing projects
  • Upgrade data network equipment to the latest stable firmware releases
  • Configure routing and switching equipment to the latest stable firmware releases
  • Provide remote support to on-site engineers and end uses customers during installation
  • Provide remote troubleshooting and fault finding if issues occur during installation
  • Undertake capacity management and audit of IP addressing and hosted devices within data centres
  • Coordinate with project management teams, third-line engineers and service desk on regular basis
  • Speak to customers via email and phone for initial requirement capture
