The B.Sc Interior Design students are hired largely in construction sectors. They are hired in giant real-estate builders at different job roles. The present article tries to explain some of the important job roles available for B.Sc Interior Design students that are beneficial to one’s career enhancements.

Interior and Spatial Designer

As an interior and spatial designer, one is responsible for design or renovation of internal spaces with architectural knowledge and creativity.

Role of the Interior and Spatial Designer

Interior and spatial designers are involved in design or renovate internal spaces, that includes structural alterations, furnishings, fixtures and fittings, lightning and colour schemes.

Responsibilities of an interior and Spatial Designer

As an interior and spatial designer, one is needed to:

  • Develop initial ideas and acquire key information about potential projects, discuss requirements in detail with clients and brief and set schedules
  • Understand clients’ needs and the needs of people using the building to develop design concepts and establish final briefs
  • Consider materials and costs according to budgets and negotiate project fees
  • Conduct feasibility studies for projects
  • Research and gather information and photographs relating to the projects
  • Produce ‘sample’ of mood boards to present to clients
  • Source products e.g. fittings, furniture, lightning, finishes, decoration and dressing and provide detailed samples for clients
  • Prepare detailed working drawings, design, Plans, models and schemes often using CAD
  • Survey buildings
  • Work in a team with other designers
  • Supervise work at the design stage and on site
  • Work closely with quantity, with architects and other design professionals to determine the best use of spaces and with manufacturing and contractors
  • Identify new business and sell services to potential clients
  • Keep up to date with new developments in the design industry

Salary & Emoluments

The fresh B.Sc Interior Design students will be earning around 3 lakhs to 6 lakhs per annum. The experienced professionals will be earning around 6 lakhs to 8 lakhs per annum. The salary depends upon the location and recruiter.

Assistant Architect

The Assistant Architects are responsible to use technical and creative skill to design structures and buildings that suit the requirements of their clients. They are also responsible for creating drawings and assisting Architects.

Role of an Assistant Architect

As an assistant architect, one is needed to assist in designing new buildings or extensions or alterations to existing structures and advise on the restoration and conservation of old properties to the architects. The assistant architects may work on individual buildings or on large redevelopment schemes and the responsibility can extend to the design of the surrounding landscape and spaces.

Responsibilities of an Assistant Architect

As an assistant architect one is responsible for:

  • Discuss the ideas, objectives, requirements and budget of a project and in some cases help to select a site with the architects
  • Consult with other professionals about design on behalf of architects
  • Assess the needs of the building and its users, advising the client on the practicality of their project
  • Prepare and present feasibility reports and design proposals to the client on behalf of architects
  • Assess the impact on the local environment
  • Use IT in design and project management, specifically using computer-aided design software
  • Keep within financial budgets and deadlines
  • Produce detailed workings, drawings and specifications
  • Specify the nature and quality of materials required
  • Prepare tender applications and presentations
  • Negotiate with contractors and other professionals on behalf of architects
  • Prepare applications for planning and building control departments
  • Draw up tender documents for contracts
  • Project, manage and help to coordinate the work of contractors
  • Control a project from start to finish
  • Carry out regular site visits to check on progress and ensure that the project is running on time and to budget
  • Resolve problems and issues that arise during construction
  • Ensure that the environmental impact of the project is managed.

Salary and Emoluments

The fresh B.Sc Interior Design students will be earning around 3 lakhs to 5 lakhs per annum. The experienced professionals will be earning around 5 lakhs to 7 lakhs per annum.

Building Control Surveyors

The Building control surveyors are responsible to ensure that building regulations are met during construction on a wide range of projects and structures.

Role of the building control surveyors

As a building control surveyors, one will be working to make sure that building regulations are followed when houses, offices and other buildings are designed and constructed and when altered, extended or converted.

Responsibilities of a Building control surveyors

As a building control surveyor, one is needed to

  • Examine plans, drawings, specifications and other documents submitted for approval to make sure they comply with building regulations
  • Inspect buildings, against regulations for public health, fire safety, energy conservation and sustainability and building accessibility
  • Where necessary, ask the client for further details
  • Advise applicants on changes to ensure legal requirements are met
  • Issue conditional approval, subject to other steps being included in the process
  • Grant approval for work to commence
  • Carry out regular inspections of the building and building methods while works are being completed
  • Inspect and test foundations and drainage work
  • Take samples of new building materials and assess their suitability
  • Keep records of the visits made to site and write reports
  • Issue completion certificates when the work has been carried out satisfactorily
  • Coordinate and communicate with members of the public, councillors, construction professionals and statutory bodies, e.g. highways, planning and environmental health departments
  • Coordinate with special interest groups such as historic building, conservation officers and national heritage organisations
  • Calculate the fee to be charged to the client
  • Keep up to date with current regulations and legislation
  • Prosecute builders if non-compliance has occurred, although this is a last resort
  • Approve demolitions and carry out surveys of potentially dangerous buildings - you may occasionally have responsibility for this if you work in local government.

Exhibition Designer

The exhibition designer is responsible for having strong design skills and should enjoy working collaboratively and should be capable of meeting strict deadlines.

Role of an Exhibition Designer

As an exhibition designer one is responsible to work on large commercial public exhibitions, showcase events, trade shows and conferences for trade industry or education or on cultural exhibitions for museums, libraries and galleries.

Responsibilities of an Exhibition Designer

As an exhibition designer one is responsible to:

  • Coordinate with clients to discuss the brief themes, ideas to the promoters
  • Discuss the brief and design concepts with the design team, finalise proposals and present these to clients
  • Develop a genuine understanding of the client’s brand products, needs and objectives as well as the motivations behind customers buying decisions
  • Create initial design sketches and computer-generated 3D visuals sometimes building models and prototypes
  • Do a variety of design work for different displays and exhibitions
  • Work on quotes once the design brief and concept are established, the costs need to be calculated to make sure the project is financially viable
  • Attend meetings with the accounts and sales teams to take briefs and to present the designs
  • Take financial responsibility for a project in terms of meeting budget constraints
  • Handle production orders for materials and site services
  • Meet with and brief suppliers
  • Transport displays to exhibition show and install and dismantle exhibition displays
  • Ensure all exhibition displays have a definite link to the overall theme
  • Make sure that the exhibition is compatible with the materials and conservation requirements
  • Ensure exhibitions are of the right size and quality
  • Coordinate with graphic and other designers, audio-visual and animatronics experts, graphic video producers and multimedia specialists and actors to create a sensory experience for the visitor
