The Bachelor of Social Welfare degree is mainly targeted towards the students who have the intention to serve the society by taking up social welfare programmes. The increased philanthropic mentality among the people and many organisations have given rise to new roles and responsibilities for the social welfare students in the field.

Social Worker

Social workers support individuals and their families that are going through difficult times and ensure that these vulnerable people are safeguarded from any harm.

Role of a Social Worker

As a social worker one is required to help improve outcomes in people’s lives. As a social worker one will work in a variety of settings within the framework of relevant legislation and procedures, supporting individuals, families and groups within the society.

Responsibilities of a Social Worker

As a social worker one is needed to:

  • Conduct interviews with individuals and families to assess and review their situation
  • Undertake and writing up assessments in collaboration with professionals which meet specified standards and timescales
  • Offering information and support
  • Organising and managing packages of support to enable people to lead the fullest lives possible
  • Recommending and sometimes making decisions about the best course of action for a particular person or family
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare reports for legal actions
  • Keep updated with latest rules and regulations related to social work

Salary & Emoluments

  • There are no fixed salaries for social workers, but they are paid stipends of 2 lakhs to 3 lakhs per annum
  • If they work for an organisation then they can earn around 4 lakhs to 6 lakhs per annum

Community Development Worker

Community development is a platform to bring people together for a better cause. The role of community development worker is very challenging because he/she should be a selfless individual with a passion to assist others.

Role of a Community Development Worker

As a community development worker, one will help the communities to bring about social change and improve the quality of life in their local area. As a community development worker, one is required to work with individuals, families or whole communities and try to bring change in their lives.

Responsibilities of a Community Development Worker

As a community development worker, one will need to:

  • Identify the community skills, assets, issues and needs
  • Be an ear for the issues of the local people
  • Develop new resources in dialogue with the community and evaluate existing programmes
  • Solve the issues of local communities on behalf of their stakeholders
  • Help to raise public awareness on issues relevant to the community
  • Developing and implementing strategies to bring better lifestyle in communities
  • Coordinating with the like-minded groups and stakeholders to set up new services
  • Recruiting and training the paid and voluntary staff

  • Starting salary will fall between 4 lakhs to 6 lakhs per annum
  • Salaries for experienced workers will be around 6 lakhs to 8 lakhs per annum

Policy Officer

The policy officers are required to include researching and advising on the issues, carrying out developmental work and coordinating with external and internal contacts.

Role of the Policy Officer

As Policy Officers, they are required to undertake or commission research. They are required to gather and analyse data and information. The policy officers are required to develop, expertise in a particular area or draw on the expertise of others.

Responsibilities of a Policy Officer

As a policy officer one is responsible:

  • To keep up to date with social, political and economic developments
  • To support and coordinate the meetings, conferences or debates
  • To write briefings, reports and speeches
  • To deliver oral briefings and presentations
  • To carry out consultations with internal and external stakeholders
  • They are required to manage and track the delivery of political organisational priorities
  • They are required to develop expertise in a particular area or advice in the generalist capacity depending on the nature of the role
  • Provide advice to senior managers, stakeholders and decision makers
  • Work with wide range of people and organisations, including senior managers, public office officials and members of the public

Charity Officer

The charity officers work for the charitable organisations, NGOs and non-profit organisations. They are required to have a focus on project management, business development, finance marketing, public relations, fund raising or volunteer management.

Role of a Charity officer

As a Charity Officer one is required to carry out marketing and public relations activities to raise the profile of the organisation’s services and campaigns. They are required to take care of fundraising materials such as pamphlets, leaflets, flyers, brochures, etc.

Responsibilities of a Charity Officer

As a Charity officer one is responsible to:

  • They are required to create and organise fund
  • Raising initiatives and events
  • They are required to carry out many administrative tasks like applying for grants and other sources of funding, managing budgets, gathering data, preparing reports, database management and many other administrative tasks
  • Carry out marketing and public relations to raise the profile of the organisation’s services and campaigns
  • Approach potential donors and maintain lists
  • Coordinate with external agencies, including voluntary sector organisations the media, local authorities, business contacts, trustees and other stakeholders or clients
  • Recruit and coordinate volunteers
  • Create awareness about the initiatives in the government level and apply for grants and other sources of funding, managing budgets, gathering data, preparing reports, database management and administrative work to meet the charity’s needs.

Salary & Emoluments

  • Starting salary will fall between 3 lakhs to 5 lakhs per annum
  • Salaries for experienced workers will be around 4 lakhs to 6 lakhs per annum

The BSW students can find ample job opportunities across different sectors of industry. The main goal of the BSW students is to serve the poor and needy by taking up social works. They can earn a decent earning for their livings for their works. Organisations are mandated to hire BSW students to take up community centric initiatives under their corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative. So, the demand is always there for the BSW students.
