Updated at:

Becoming a doctor can be anybody’s dream and the courses of Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery (BAMS) and Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine & Surgery (BHMS) are those courses that turn these dreams into reality.

Both BAMS and BHMS courses believe in Indian medical science that were proven to be effective over allopathic medicine or conventional medicine over thousands of years. The BAMS degree students can become the Ayurvedic doctors while the BHMS students can become the Homeopathic specialists, in both the cases they become doctors.

BAMS: Overview

Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) is a 5.5-years long graduate degree that covers the study of the integrated system of modern medicine and traditional Ayurveda. The main aim of the course is to provide students the basic education in Ayurveda and its related fields. The course also prepares the students with the basic education and knowledge in Ayurvedic Science and its application for different health studies and health problems caused by the people.

The Ayurveda medicine system basically deals with the healing of the medical conditions using the medicinal herbs and medicines prepared using medicinal plants. Ayurveda is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body and spirit.

Ayurveda is considered as one of the oldest systems of medicine and the roots from its traces are indicated from Vedic times. The BAMS course aims to provide professional excellence in Ayurveda through practical training to become an efficient practitioner, teacher, researcher and competent Ayurvedic Physician and Surgeon.

Ayurveda is considered by many scholars to be the oldest healing science. In Sanskrit Ayurveda means “The science of life”. Ayurvedic knowledge originated in India more than 5,000 years ago and is often called the “Mother of All Healing”.

BHMS: Overview

Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine & Surgery (BHMS) is an undergraduate programme that covers in-depth medical knowledge of the homeopathic system. The course is of 5.5-years duration. The main aim of the course is to cover the theoretical and practical knowledge of the homeopathic system. Homeopathy is based on the self-healing power of our bodies and focuses on accounting for that.

Homeopathy is treatment based on the use of highly diluted substances which practitioners claim can cause the body to heal itself. Homeopathy is basically a complementary or alternative medicine different from treatments that are part of conventional western medicine in important ways.

BAMS vs BHMS: Course Duration and Fees

The duration of both BAMS and BHMS is 5.5 years, with 4.5-years of academic and 1-year mandatory internship. There is a huge demand for a BAMS course when compared to a BHMS course. So,the fees for a BAMS course depend upon colleges and it is higher when compared to a BHMS course. Usually, the merit seats through counselling sessions will be the same across all the colleges. The fees may vary in case of management seats.

The students can get more details about the management fee structure for both BAMS and BHMS by contacting Galaxy Education.

BAMS vs BHMS: Admission Process and Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility and admission process is same in both the cases, the students who have completed their PUC or 10+2 with physics, chemistry and biology as core subjects with 50% aggregate marks from recognised boards are eligible to apply for BAMS and BHMS.

The students looking for admissions to BAMS and BHMS courses have to qualify the NEET-UG exam and have to undergo the Central Council for Indian Medicine (CCIM) counselling sessions, to apply for merit seats.

BAMS vs BHMS: Popular Specializations

Both BAMS and BHMS have good number of specialisations, the students who have completed their BAMS can join MD Ayurveda course with the following specialisations, they are:

  • KaumaraBhritya
  • Shalya Tantra
  • Rog & Vikriti Vigyan
  • Agad Tantra

  • Sharir Kriya

The students who have completed their BHMS course can join the following specialisations:

  • Homeopathic Pharmacy

BAMS vs BHMS: Career Scope

Both the courses have excellent career scopes and opportunities; there has been a huge demand for traditional medicine like Ayurveda and homeopathy in the last decade. Many patients are shifting towards this traditional medical treatment for many life-threatening diseases and have seen positive results. This has increased the demand for students from both the degrees.

The BAMS students are hired in many ayurvedic hospitals in both India and abroad, although the demand for them is more in gulf countries and European continent. The typical BAMS doctor can easily earn 5 Lakhs to 10 Lakhs per annum. If he/she sets up an ayurvedic clinic then the earnings will be 5-times more.

Similarly, the BHMS students are also hired in homeopathic hospitals, clinics etc. The BHMS doctors can easily earn 4 lakhs to 8 lakhs per annum. He/she can also set up clinics to take consultation.
