Tamil Nadu will not implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, said Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. The government of Tamil Nadu launched ‘Illam Thedi Kalvi’ or “Education at the doorstep” scheme under its own State Education policy instead of NEP 2020.

The Ministry of Higher Education further stated that the new State Education Policy is better than NEP 2020, and is targeted towards providing quality education to all at their doorsteps. The state aims to achieve a 100% literacy rate in the next 5 to 10 years under the “State Education Policy”. The state ensured that through its new State Education Policy it tries to imbibe critical thinking, analytical skills, interpersonal skills, communication skills etc, to all the students at their schools and specific training is already being given to the teachers.

The Tamil Nadu government has also opposed the single national-level entrance exam — NEET — for medical admissions. The state claimed that it had formed an expert committee to look into the implications of the NEET exam. The studies from the expert committee showed that, the students enrolled in MBBS courses through NEET exam have performed poorly when compared to students who were enrolled based on their Class 12th marks.

The state also further highlighted that the students from affluent families had more tendency to clear NEET when compared to others. This is due to their access to the high-end coaching institutes that claim to give best coaching for the NEET subjects at an expensive fee structure. One of the experts claimed that the students from well-to-do families get enrolled to these coaching institutes, and it is observed that these students clear the NEET exam at ease when compared to non-coaching students. This has reduced the chance for many deserving and dedicated students from weaker economic backgrounds to miss a chance to crack the NEET exam.
