The central government gives nod to 157 medical colleges under Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS)
The central government has given permission to 157 new medical colleges by investing Rs 17,691.08 crore under CSS. The Union health ministry gave nod to develop new medical colleges across the country and the ministry further stated that nearly 16,000 MBBS seats would be added to the existing number of seats to increase the medical education in the country. Under the new initiative the central government has already given approval for about 48 medical colleges in 15 districts from this academic year.
The union health ministry of the central government further stated that about 6,500 of 16,000 seats have already been created in the 64 new medical colleges in a phased manner. The scheme is taken under the centrally sponsored schemes (CSS) and the central government has already provided about Rs 2,451.1 crore for upgradation of existing government medical colleges to increase MBBS seats in the country.
Under the new scheme about 157 new medical colleges have been approved out of which 63 medical colleges across India are already functional. The remaining colleges will be developed under 3-phases with the participation of stakeholders from central and state governments.
