The MBBS students after completing their Master of Surgery course are termed as General Surgeons. The General Surgeons employ a wide range of knowledge and skills to perform surgery often in emergency situations. As the name indicates that the Master of Surgery is related to surgical aspects of a medical condition. The MS course trains the MBBS students with surgical skills and surgical techniques that are related to different body parts of a human body.

The General Surgery encompasses a broad range of surgery which includes:

  • Surgical conditions of the gastrointestinal tract from the oesophagus to the anus
  • Breast conditions
  • Kidney, pancreas and liver transplantation
  • Trauma to the abdomen and thorax

No candidate shall be admitted to any post graduate degree / diploma course unless the candidate has obtained and produced the eligibility certificate issued by the University.

Admission Process:

Candidates seeking admission to MD should mandatorily qualify NEET-PG Exam. The NEET qualified students are required to undergo two types of counselling. 

1.The students seeking admission to medical colleges affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) should undergo the counselling conducted by the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA).

2.The students seeking admission to deemed universities should undergo counselling conducted by Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).

Career Scope of MS Surgery

The General Surgeons have an important role to play in hospitals and nursing homes. They are required to be available in an emergency situation and conduct emergency surgeries. The General Surgeons also perform trauma surgery in case of accidents. The job requires a close collaboration with other specialist colleagues and a holistic approach to treatment. In the initial days of their career they will be working closely with the team of expert surgeons. As they gain experience, they may soon lead a team of specialist surgeons as a ‘Lead Surgeon’ in hospitals and nursing homes.

If they are interested in teaching then they can join medical colleges as assistant professors and take up classes and lectures in general surgery and its related topics. Salary Package: They can earn around 10 lakhs to 15 lakhs per annum.

Endocrine Surgeons: The Endocrine Surgeons are responsible to detect, diagnose and provide treatment for the thyroid related problems. They are also responsible to diagnose thyroid cancer in the patients and ensure that it is not spread to different parts of body. They are also responsible to perform surgeries to thyroid glands.

Salary Package: They can around 12 lakhs to 20 lakhs per annum

Transplant Surgeon: The transplant surgeons are required to conduct transplantation of body parts such as liver, kidney, pancreas, heart, bone marrow etc. These surgeons are highly skilled and require an in-depth knowledge about the body parts and play a crucial role in saving the patients lives by conducting transplantation surgeries.

Salary Package: They will easily earn around 15 to 25 lakhs per annum
