Introduction to AIIMS 

The AIIMS, also known as All India Institute of Medical Sciences is one of the most prestigious and renowned medical institutions in India. Established in 1956 by an Act of Parliament, the AIIMS was founded with a vision of providing best medical education, interesting research opportunities and advanced healthcare services to the people of India. 

Over the years, AIIMS has expanded significantly. They have set up multiple branches across different states in India making sure the benefits of advanced medical education and healthcare facilities reach a wider audience. Each of the AIIMS institutions have  advanced infrastructure, modern medical technology and highly skilled professionals. This makes it a top destination for medical aspirants and patients as well. 

AIIMS plays a crucial role in building the future of healthcare in India as they provide excellent doctors, specialists and researchers who have a solid contribution to the medical advancements globally. There are around 24 operational AIIMS campuses across India, as per 2025. These prestigious institutions are established under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) and aim to provide top class education and healthcare facilities.

These AIIMS institutes provide undergraduate (MBBS), postgraduate (MD/MS), and super-specialty (DM/MCh) medical education along with research opportunities.

AIIMS Entrance Exam in NEET and Other Exams

AIIMS MBBS Entrance Exam

Until 2019, AIIMS conducted its own AIIMS MBBS entrance exam for admission. However, from 2020 onwards, AIIMS admissions are based on the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) score.

AIIMS MBBS Admission via NEET

To get admission into AIIMS for an MBBS degree, candidates must:

  1. Qualify NEET UG: AIIMS MBBS admission is conducted through NEET UG, which is regulated by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

  2. Score High: Due to high competition, students aiming for AIIMS need a very high NEET score (650+ out of 720 for AIIMS New Delhi).

  3. AIIMS Counseling: The AIIMS admissions are handled by the MCC (Medical Counseling Committee) through AIQ (All India Quota) counseling 

  4. Eligibility Criteria:

    • Must complete 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English.

    • Should have at least 50% marks (for SC/ST/OBC - 45%).

    • Minimum age limit is 17 years.

AIIMS PG Admission

For postgraduate courses (MD/MS/MCh/DM), AIIMS conducts the INI-CET (Institute of National Importance Combined Entrance Test). The AIIMS PG Exam has been merged with INI-CET since 2020. The exam is conducted twice a year (January and July sessions) for AIIMS PG admissions.

Other AIIMS Entrance Exams

Apart from MBBS and PG, AIIMS conducts separate entrance exams for:

  • AIIMS Nursing (BSc & MSc)
  • AIIMS Ph.D. Programs
  • AIIMS Fellowship Programs

AIIMS Seats for MBBS in India

AIIMS provides MBBS seats across 24 institutions. The total number of AIIMS MBBS seats in India is 2044.

  • AIIMS New Delhi – 132 seats

  • Other AIIMS (23 Institutes) – 1912 seats (approx. 85 per AIIMS)

  • Reservation Policy:

    • General: 50.5%

    • OBC: 27%

    • SC: 15%

    • ST: 7.5%

    • EWS: 10% (within General category)

Scholarships Provided by Central and Karnataka Government

AIIMS students are eligible for various scholarships offered by both central and state governments. These scholarships help financially weak and meritorious students.

Central Government Scholarships for AIIMS Students

  1. Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship – For top 20% of students in their 12th standard.
  2. National Fellowship and Scholarship for Higher Education of ST Students – For ST category students.
  3. AIIMS Merit-Based Scholarships – Provided to top-ranking students.
  4. PMSS (Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme) – For economically weaker sections (EWS).
  5. DBT JRF and ICMR Fellowship – For research students.

Karnataka Government Scholarships for AIIMS Students

Even though AIIMS is a central institution, Karnataka government provides additional scholarships for students from Karnataka:

  1. Vidya Siri Scholarship - For economically backward students. 
  2. KMDC Scholarship - For students from religious minority communities in Karnataka
  3. Dr. P.S. Shankar Medical - To support first-year MBBS students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds in Karnataka
  4. Karnataka Prize Money Scholarship - SC/ST Students who have completed their Diploma or degree Course.
  5. SSP Scholarship - scholarship is aimed at providing financial assistance to students belonging to SC/ST
