Recently, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has updated the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET UG) syllabus for 2024. The NEET UG 2024 exam is scheduled for May 5th and will be conducted in 13 different languages. The exam will be in pen-paper-based mode and the duration will be 03 hours and 20 minutes. The exam primarily comprises three core subjects i.e. Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

The New Eligibility Criteria

The NMC has updated the requirements for eligibility for NEET UG 2024. Candidates who took physics, chemistry, biology, or biotechnology as electives in their 12th grade are now eligible to take the medical entrance exam, according to the commission. Moreover, applicants who previously had their petitions for eligibility certificates denied are still qualified to take the test. A candidate can also register for the exam even if they plan to take the exam the following year.

Candidates must score at least 50% in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology on the qualifying exam. Furthermore, candidates from the SC, ST, and OBC-NCL categories must score at least 40% of marks. Applicants can enroll in undergraduate medical programs at any medical college in the nation if they pass the NEET UG exam.

The NMC has decided that NEET UG 2024 will not be conducted outside India. There are 544 centres in India for the students who are willing to take the exam.

NTA Changes Tie-Breaking Rule for 2024

This year, the NTA has revised the computerized draw process and changed the tie-breaking criteria for NEET UG. This change, which was made public shortly before the March 16 extended registration deadline, will significantly affect how applicants are ranked in the eagerly awaited exam. The original rule of distributing ranks based on the number of correct and incorrect answers will be used in place of the computerized draw of lots rule for breaking ties.

As per the tie-breaking mechanism, applicants will be ranked according to their percentile scores or marks in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics sequence. Following that, candidates will be ranked according to the percentage of right and wrong responses, with a focus on the aforementioned areas. By doing away with the automated draw method, the NTA intends to speed up the ranking procedure while maintaining transparency and fairness in the selection of candidates.

The Updated NEET UG Syllabus 2024

The NEET UG 2024 syllabus has been revised in comparison to the previous year. Subjects that were not included in the most recent NCERT book or taught anywhere on the school board have been removed.
