Recently, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has stated that 242 doctors have been debarred from appearing in NEET PG 2024 as they have left their seat in NEET-PG 2023 counselling. This statement was released by the MCC after an RTI was filed by RTI activist Dr Vivek Pandey.  The expelled doctors opposed the move of the MCC and are planning to file a PIL to get the opportunity to appear in the upcoming NEET-PG 2024 exam.

“The move taken by MCC to disqualify the doctors from appearing the NEET-PG exam has brought seat wastage under 300 which used to range from 1000-1500. The 242 seats will lie vacant for the next three years which will cost cores to the exchequer. The counselling seats are chosen by the students as per their choice and later given up which not only cost money but also prohibit students who could have used the seat for their studies,” added a Health Ministry official.

Dr Aviral Mathur, president, FORDA, says, “The MCC rules should not go against the young doctor’s future. The MCC can impose some penalty instead. The doctors leaving the PG seats are not only wasting the government’s money but also smearing out the chances for the students who need those seats. The MCC must reconsider their statement. While the students who are complaining about losing one year should have thought that before blocking the seat.”

“Excluding students from upcoming examinations and counselling amounts to a significant loss of a valuable academic year, inflicting considerable distress upon aspiring individuals, “adds Dr Vivek Pandey.
