Recently, the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) committee has changed the curriculum of civil engineering which added courses on AI-ML and accessibility, provision for both minor and honours degrees and a mandatory internship. Further AICTE has also given permission to the engineering colleges to design their own curriculum.

The new curriculum

The new curriculum which have been revamped completely gives a lot of flexibility to the students. Though civil engineering branch admissions are reducing year-by-year the students are getting more job opportunities in the circuit branches therefore many circuit branches are approved by the AICTE. The new curriculum has been designed to make student industry-ready. The introduction of mandatory internship will help students not only gain industry related experience but also learn about the subject in depth.

The difference between the new and old syllabus

The new syllabus is aligned with the New Education Policy 2020 which focuses on the holistic, experimental and interdisciplinary courses. The major difference between the old and the new syllabus is the six-month compulsory internship.

Additionally, the Indian Knowledge System mandatory course has also been added to educate the students about the rich Indian heritage. Civil engineering has eight to nine streams in general but the new syllabus has ten tracks for programme elective course. Further, seven programme electives has been added which will produce engineers with different specialization.
