Dentistry is the branch of medicine that deals with teeth, gums, cavities and other associated areas. In a nutshell, it is concerned with the maintenance and restoration of oral health. The most popular courses offering a degree to practice dentistry are Bachelor in Dental Surgery and Masters in Dental Surgery. A college can offer these degrees only if it has been recognized by the Dental Council of India. This dental council is tasked for the duty of ensuring that quality is maintained in Dental Education in India. It also awards colleges that excel and go beyond the basic minimum requirements.
For a student to be eligible to apply to MDS, he must meet 2 criteria. First, he must hold a BDS degree and second, he must be eligible under NEET. As regards the first criteria, a student who has passed 10+2 or its equivalent with a minimum aggregate of 50% can apply for a BDS Degree provided he is above the age of 17 as of December 31st of the year of admission. After joining BDS, he must also complete 12 months of Rotary Internship. Secondly, he must score the cut of marks as required by the college in NEET
MDS is a 3 year course according to the prescriptions of the Dental Council of India. The subjects which will be taught in this course are Endodontic, which deal with Root canals, treating cracked teeth etc., Prosthodontics, which is regarding diagnosis and treatment of oral appearance and comfort, Periodontics, which deals with teeth diseases, preventive and conservative dentistry, Maxillofacial surgery, which deals with treatment in the Maxillofacial area, and Orthodontics, which deals with treatment of malposition teeth among others. Most of these subjects are dealt with in the BDS course, but are taught in more detail in MDS with specialization
The advantages of persuing a MDS degree are qualified. On one hand, it offers specialization and gives additional knowledge on a specific area of dentistry that you are interested in. Further, you placements and pay packages might improve. Once the course is complete, a graduate can choose to work in a large hospital or under a senior dentist or may also choose to open his own clinic. But on the other hand, the value of this degree is decreasing. More accurately, almost everyone is opting for this degree and hence, the market is saturated, resulting in no real marginal benefit.
Though the market is saturated, there is no real alternative to take apart from this course, as those without a MDS are disadvantaged by virtue of everyone else having it. Hence, anyone who doesn, t is considered under-qualified, making it a necessity. Since this is the case, one can prepare for the entrance through an exam such as NEET or find another way of direct admission, such as through management quota, which is a lot more expensive. Lastly always keep in mind the basic requirements, such as highly qualified faculty, equipped labs and library when choosing a college to apply for.
