Students who want to become a dentist can study Bachelors in dental surgery after the class 12th examination. The BDS course is for 3 to 5 years and can be pursued after MBBS as well.

Eligibility Criteria And Admission

A candidate who has studied science (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology and must study English) and wants to study dentistry can do so by applying to bachelors in dental surgery after class 12. The student should be of 17 or 18 years of age and must clear the 12th standard examination with a minimum of 50% marks of the following subjects mentioned above from a recognized school. NEET is mandatory to be cleared for BDS. The student also needs to clear the cutoff of NEET entrance exam to apply in any dental colleges in Karnataka. The cut-off marks vary every year depending upon the variation of scores but more or less it remains the same.

The admission depends on the marks obtained in 12th examination and the scores of the competitive exam. The candidate will first have to register himself in any dental colleges by providing email is and password and he or she can apply to that specific college. Fee Structure And Other Provisions

The fee structure depends on whether the institution is private or not. Private universities are a bit more expensive than government approved universities but the money is worth paying. Loans could be taken to study BDS in private universities. Bachelors in dental surgery are a four-year course and the average fee is around 2 to 3 lacs. The scholarship is often awarded to students who rank first in entrance test the fee structure also depends on the hostel facilities, food provided and availability of accommodation.

The students after clearing bachelors in a dental surgery can become a general dentist under the supervision of a practitioner. The payment of a general dentist may not be sufficient but it will provide the experience and knowledge about how to handle and work with people having dental problems. They will learn more which will help them to apply for masters in dental surgery.
